Sometimes, there is opportunity in adversity. The Indiana Fever struggled with injuries, with Sophie Cunningham, Caitlin Clark, and Sydney Colson missing a bunch of games. The franchise took a chance with Aari McDonald, which worked well for them, signing her for the rest of the season.
In a recent game against the Las Vegas Aces, while CC was out following a groin injury, the 26-year-old guard took over the playmaking responsibility. But one of the plays earned praise from her teammates, and Cunningham was particularly pumped up with the action.
Sophie Cunningham Heaps Praise On Aari McDonald
After a loss against the New York Liberty, it was a must-win game for the Indiana franchise. Entering the home court in new ‘Stranger Things’ themed jerseys, the side needed a spark with their top assist maker out of the contest. Mid-season acquisition took the center stage and threaded important plays, staying true to the point guard role.
In the closing moments, with teams separated by just five points and any mistake would have cost the game, the former Arizona star stepped up and drained the step-back three-pointer to nearly put the game out of reach. The franchise shared the play as “Cheeze-It Teamwork moment of the game”. Her teammate Cunningham quickly replied with an “Unreal” comment.
The play was significant, energizing the supporters who witnessed a great comeback in the second half. Her teammates also gave her chest bumps, showing appreciation for the made basket. The 2023 Champions called the timeout, but it was nearly the end of their fight back as the Fever closed the game with an 80-70 scoreline.
The Former Sparks guard was efficient, with two steals, four assists, and two rebounds. She scored nine points and made all three three-pointers (3) in the game. Her last one was probably the most significant, as she won the game for her side.

Aari McDonald Taking Up Key Role For Indiana Fever
This was not the only time the 2021 rookie bailed out the Indiana franchise. At 26, she is a perfect backup for CC, pushing experienced Sydney Colson down the pecking order. Her playmaking is most effective for the side, but many Fever teammates acknowledged her defensive plays and the energy she brings to the side while on the court.

Playing in 14 games for the 2012 champs, the 5-foot-6 guard is averaging 8.3 points (fifth on the team). She is also second in the assists category with an average of 4.4 per game. Coach Stephanie White might have found a perfect backup in the backcourt: a young player who fits the system seamlessly.
Her team will face the Chicago Sky at the United Center on July 27. Fans will expect a similar performance from the young guard if Clark is unavailable for the game.
