Ionescu was born on December 6, 1997 in Walnut Creek, California. She played high school basketball at Miramonte High School, where she built a reputation as one of the best guards in the country.
Her college career at the University of Oregon (2016–2020) is legendary. She became the NCAA’s all-time leader in triple-doubles (26), showing her ability to score, rebound, and pass at an elite level. In her senior year, she recorded her 26th triple-double just hours after speaking at Kobe Bryant’s memorial service, which became one of the most iconic moments of her career.
She won the Naismith Player of the Year Award and the John R. Wooden Award in 2019 and 2020, cementing herself as one of the greatest college players ever.
Ionescu was drafted first overall by the New York Liberty in 2020. Her rookie season was cut short by an ankle injury, but she bounced back strong in the following years.
In 2022, she became the first player in WNBA history to record a triple-double with at least 30 points, finishing with 31 points, 13 rebounds, and 10 assists against the Las Vegas Aces. That season, she averaged 17.4 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 6.3 assists per game.
In 2023, she helped lead the Liberty to the WNBA Finals alongside Breanna Stewart and Jonquel Jones. She also set the record for the most three-pointers made in a WNBA All-Star 3-point contest (37 points), surpassing even NBA records for the same format.
