The WNBA finals are underway, with both teams four wins away from the ultimate trophy of the season. Many expected stars to come up with a unique fashion to exert their authority on the court, at least the Aces players who were playing at home. But A’ja Wilson shocked everyone as she wore Susie Carmichael A’Ones for the game.
Before the start of the series, Wilson offered a unique analogy to describe the Las Vegas Aces’ journey back to the WNBA Finals, and she also has a story behind her sneaker choice.
A’ja Wilson Reveals Why She Chose Susie Carmichael’s A’Ones
The 29-year-old forward has a huge status in the league. Four-time league MVP, two-time champion, and many other record-holders, Aces’ forward has a larger-than-life personality that even her boyfriend, NBA superstar Bam Adebayo, sometimes gets overshadowed. But for Game 1, she chose to wear a sneaker that highlights a little girl.

“Carmichael is that girl. I don’t know. It’s just a funky, fun pair to wear, and I love them, and we got all my shoes. I love them, obviously. But to be Carmichael, I don’t know. There’s always an inner child that comes out of us, and it’s crazy cause today, Becky showed us a video of us from high school and college. It was kind of storytelling us to where we are now,” Wilson explained in an interview.

“Susie Carmichael is that girl.”
Also told an awesome story about Becky Hammon showing the team pictures of themselves as young girls and how they won with their sisters.

“Like all the things that we’ve done in high school. The championships we’ve won with the people that we’ve won them with, and it brings us now to the women that we are and how we still have that heart of a child, and we still have that heart of wanting to win with our sisters. So it kind of just kind of relates to that as well. But I love Susie,” Wilson concluded the story.

An interesting and innovative way to channel and strengthen the special bond between players is really appreciable. And players responded well, stepping up for each other. Wilson also set a WNBA finals record with a double-double performance, and yet the game winners came from the bench.

The four-time MVP was in check as the Mercury’s top defenders targeted the Aces’ big three. But the difference makers were the bench players for the victors. Dana Evans set a unique record in the game with her 21 points, four steals, three assists, and two rebounds performance. Jewell Lloyd was equally effective, scoring 18 points in the game. Becky Hammon lauded their impact, and so did Wilson.
During the post-game interview, she said, “Yeah, I mean, they are, they are our key factors. I’ve said multiple times that Dana’s our battery. She makes us play at a different pace. And also, when it comes to Jewell, this is, this has always been Jewell. These two people, in particularly are two of the most hard-working people that I see in practice.”
Interestingly, Evans’ top score was 14 in the postseason, while Lloyd’s last score of 18 points was in the regular season game finale. They stepped up at the right time for the Aces, and Wilson will love to see more from them in upcoming games.
