The WNBA regular season ended with very unexpected standings, considering the start of the season. The New York Liberty dropped down to fifth place after the strong start, while the Las Vegas Aces raced to a second-place finish behind A’ja Wilson’s historic performances.
The 29-year-old Wilson received the MVP Award from her boyfriend, Bam Adebayo. While she got emotional receiving the award, she gave an inspirational speech that motivated the team for the playoffs.
A’ja Wilson Praises Her Teammates
Winner of the AP MVP award, she was once again the favorite to retain her MVP title. Beating competition from Napheesa Collier and Alyssa Thomas, the former South Carolina had 51 first-place votes and 21 second-place votes. Giving an acceptance speech, she chose to thank and inspire her teammates for the postseason, firing shots at critics at the same time.

“It hasn’t been easy for us. They counted us out, they wrote us all off, but we showed up every single day and we worked our a**es off… it has my name on it and it’s gonna be that, but this one is all of us. There is no way that without each and every one of you guys,” Wilson said.

However, not too long after, HC Becky Hammon also congratulated the winner during the trophy presentation ceremony in the Aces training facility. As the congratulations messages started pouring in, NBA superstar LeBron James sent ‘4 Piece Chicken Nugget’ to WNBA sis Wilson after winning the WNBA MVP award. In the playoffs, the Aces took three games to defeat the seventh seed Seattle Storm in the opening round, while they face the sixth seed Indiana Fever in the semifinal next.

A’ja Wilson’s Second Half Performance Earned Her MVP Award
While Napheesa Collier and Alyssa Thomas were consistent players in the regular season, the massive performance from the Aces’ forward in the second half earned her MVP award. Leading the team to a 16-0 regular season run, Wilson averaged over 25 points and 12 rebounds.
She finished the season with 23.4 points and 10.2 rebounds. She was efficient on the floor, registering a career-high 42.4% 3-pointer per game. On the defensive end, she had 2.3 blocks per game and 1.6 steals. She will be looking to push for the third championship riding on her extraordinary form.
