Not long ago, Cathy Engelbert was in the Aces’ training camp as A’ja Wilson received the MVP trophy from Bam Adebayo. The moment was an emotional one for the 29-year-old forward, who worked hard for the accolade and carried her team to the second spot in the league standings.
The WNBA Commissioner gave a heartfelt speech praising the superstar forward as Engelbert clicked pictures with her and the MVP trophy. However, a week later, after Napheesa Collier responded to a few statements made by the WNBA commissioner, the former champion is feeling ‘disgusted’.
A’ja Wilson Supports Napheesa Collier
Two different teams and two different situations, but the team leaders shared the same views. That was the case when Napheesa Collier criticized Cathy Engelbert in a press conference after the semifinal exit, and A’ja Wilson, moving into the WNBA finals, showed support for the MVP runner-up.

“I was honestly disgusted by the comments that Cathy made. But at the same time, I’m very appreciative that we have people like Phee in our committee of players’ association representing us, because that’s what we are going to have to continue to make the push to stand on what we believe in. I’m grateful to have those types of people be able to continue to speak up for us,“ Wilson said.
She even praised the 28-year-old forward as ‘Phee’ runs the Unrivaled league, which is also gaining popularity. She also showed support for Colliers’ stand in CBA negotiations.

Cathy Egelbert is facing heavy criticism, and many demand her resignation from the post. There were reports that the WNBA Commissioner would leave the league after the 2025 season. But the WNBA rubbishes Engelbert’s departure. As for Wilson, she will be looking to win back the title after missing out in 2024.
A’ja Wilson With Third WNBA Final Appearance In Four Years
Wilson won her record-breaking fourth WNBA Most Valuable Player Award. Her gameplay was instrumental in the Aces’ surge to the second spot and back to the finals. She put up exceptional performances in the semifinal series with back-to-back 30-point games.
Playing against the deep and talented Phoenix Mercury team, she will aim to replicate her scoring form and challenge Alyssa Thomas’ defensively strong squad. The South Carolina player also needs to take care of the defensive end, as they struggled against both the Seattle Storm and the Indiana Fever. Jackie Young and Chelsey Grey have been very supportive on the offensive end.
