The Phoenix Mercury continues to ride high on its star triplet. Alyssa Thomas, Satou Sabally, and Kahleah Copper delivered a clinical performance in Game 3 of the series. They had a massive comeback to win Game 2. Thomas warned her team about the strong Lynx response in the next game.
But the team responded the AT’s call and emerged victorious in front of the home crowd. They are now a win away from the finals appearance.
Alyssa Thomas Loves Being Counted Out
The Phoenix Mercury was no one’s choice for the WNBA Championship in the 2025 season, with the New York Liberty, Minnesota Lynx, and Las Vegas Aces ruling the league with their super teams.

While the team performed exceedingly well before the playoffs, their first matchup was against the defending champions, the New York Liberty. The side lost its opening game despite having the home court advantage, and many started to count them out instantly. But that’s the part where AT thrives. In the series decider, Thomas recorded a historic WNBA playoffs triple-double as the Phoenix Mercury upset the New York Liberty.
“I’ve dealt with my whole career. I think people have always underestimated me or, you know, counting me out. And, I love it. I mean, it just fuels me even more. So, I appreciate when they don’t pick us because, you know, that’s just added fuel, added motivation,” Thomas Said in the interview.

She highlighted that the side went through much adversity in the 2025 season, with injuries early on and then a drop in form in the second phase of the season. But now the team is 2-1 up in the series and has a real chance of winning it all in the end.
Alyssa Thomas Could Be Finals MVP Contender
Considering the fact that the Mercury does make it to the final and defeat either the Aces or the Fever in the series, it will be all on AT. The 33-year-old carried the team throughout the series. Defeating the reigning champions, then the finalist with the MVP runners-up Napheesa Collier, and then probably A’ja Wilson and her Aces (since they have a 2-1 lead over the Fever) will be a perfect ending for Thomas’ incredible season.
Once again leading from the front, the Connecticut Sun rookie averages nearly a triple-double in the playoffs (17.8 points, 8.5 rebounds, and nine assists). She also averages 2.2 steals per game. Looking at her form and Nate Tibbetts’ gameplay, the veteran forward will run the show for the Mercury in the finals, and her postseason numbers are making her an ideal candidate for the Finals MVP title.
