The Phoenix Mercury might have surprised many with their ‘rebuilt’ form, but there’s always more. And safe to say, Alyssa Thoms is leading the charge. In a recent game against the Washington Mystics, the forward once again scripted the ‘victory’ for her team, putting up a solid performance at the CareFirst Arena.
She had another double-double outing in points and rebounds, leading the game in both stats. She also made WNBA history, surpassing the three-time champion Candace Parker in impressive stats.
Alyssa Thomas Surpasses Candace Parker To Set WNBA Record
Since joining the three-time WNBA Champion franchise, the 33-year-old has matched her career-best stats. Operating freely as scorer, rebounder, and often facilitator, the six-time All-Star put the team in third place in the 2025 WNBA season.
Dominating the floor in the capital city, the star had 27 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists. This is her sixth career game, most in the league, with 20+ points, 10+ rebounds, and 8+ assists, surpassing Candace Parker for the WNBA record. The Sparks legend won three titles in her career, while the 33-year-old forward is aiming for her first title.
In the game against the Mystics, Satou Sabally chipped in with 15 points and three rebounds. Starting guard Makani had 13 points. Shakira Austin scored 20 points for the losing team as the Mystics go below .500 record and hold eighth place in the standings.

Alyssa Thomas Could Be A Strong MVP Candidate
Familiar faces are leading the charts in the MVP race with Napheesa Collier and A’ja Wilson continuing their 2024 form. However, it is essential to note that both these stars have support from All-Star teammates during their prime. This is not the case for the former Maryland player.

Playing alongside Sabally for most of the early season, the 2023 rebounding leader maintained the winning momentum. The addition of DeWanna Bonner and the return of Kahleah Copper provided some support to surging forward. But the pair is yet to find their groove in the 2025 season.
Although Bonner made some clutch plays on her return, only AT remains a consistent performer for the side. She leads the league in assists. Also, she is maintaining a healthy average in rebounds (fifth in the league), steals (13th in the league), and scoring (17th in the league). With her all-around gameplay, the Mercury forward could be a worthy name in the MVP discussions.
