Angel Reese has been the heartbeat of the Chicago Sky this season, dominating with her scoring and rebounding. But off the court, her blunt comments about the team’s direction have stirred a storm. Even Reese’s future at Sky is looking concerning from a point now.
As the Sky limp to the end of a tough season, one voice from the WNBA’s past is stepping in with a mix of tough love and wisdom for the young star. Recently, WNBA legend Angel McCoughtry had a piece of advice for the Sky rookie.
Angel McCoughtry Has A Piece Of Advice For Angel Reese
Angel Reese has been a force for the Chicago Sky, and there’s no doubt about that. She is leading the team with 14.7 points and 12.6 rebounds per game while ranking high in assists and steals. But her September 3 comments to the Chicago Tribune sparked controversy when she questioned the team’s reliance on 36-year-old guard Courtney Vandersloot, who suffered a season-ending ACL tear, and criticized the Sky’s free agency moves.

Reese’s call for younger, championship-tested talent and her hint at exploring other options if the team didn’t improve didn’t sit well with the organization. Not only that, even after a half-game suspension, a WNBA executive claimed Reese was demanding a trade outside Chicago.
Amid all this, legend McCoughtry didn’t shy away from addressing Reese’s misstep. She shared a story about advising a young A’ja Wilson, who cried after missing the playoffs early in her career, to stay patient as her team built toward success.
“So you have to go take the good with the bad and know that even though you’re having a losing season, it’s how you say it. But you’re so blessed. You have everything in front of you. So as a leader, what you do? You go to the front office at the end. You go see your GMs- ‘Hey, what can we do? Who can we bring in? What vets can we bring in?’” she said.

Though her advice comes from experience from the time when McCoughtry led the Atlanta Dream to three WNBA Finals appearances. For Reese, it’s a blueprint to turn her influence into constructive change without burning bridges.
Sky’s Challenges Add To Angel Reese’s Frustration
The Chicago Sky’s 2025 season was a rough ride, filled with injuries and poor performance. Courtney Vandersloot’s return was supposed to strengthen the backcourt, but her ACL tear just five minutes into a June 6 game against Indiana left the team scrambling.
Without her, the Sky struggled to find rhythm, finishing with one of the league’s worst records for the second straight year. Reese’s frustration boiled over in her Tribune interview, where she expressed a desire for the front office to pursue “great players” to avoid another losing campaign. The fallout from Reese’s comments has sparked trade rumors. However, the right thing for now would be to wait and watch how things turn out.
