The debate for the greatest player in the league has been going on for years, with new stars joining the WNBA. The recent victory by the Las Vegas Aces made A’ja Wilson the most decorated WNBA player in the league’s history.
While many call her the greatest WNBA player, her closest competition right now is rookie Caitlin Clark. Without an NCAA championship, the former Iowa star earned a place in the AP Women’s Basketball All-Time team.
Her supporters took a subtle jab at haters after Clark’s inclusion in the first team, calling her the greatest player in Women’s basketball. HC Becky Hammon gives her views on the argument.
Becky Hammon Picks A’ja Wilson Over Caitlin Clark
In her recent appearance on CNBC, host Alex Sherman asked the Las Vegas Aces HC about the complex situation in the WNBA, as Wilson is widely viewed as the best player in the league. Still, the Fever guard is the face of the league, which creates an awkward dynamic.

The 48-year-old broke denies any awkwardness and said, “I think people want to make more of it than what it is. Let the numbers do the talking and the winning do the talking. Caitlin had a tough year, obviously, with injuries this year; she’s going to be a tremendous player in this league. There’s no doubt about that. A’ja Wilson is the best player on the planet, and you got the hardware and the numbers and everything to back it up.”

Yet the coach credited CC for her impact and added that the playmaker brings in the fanfare. She accepted that the 24-year-old was one of the most exciting players she had seen on a collegiate level, and added that the 2024 rookie would be a great professional for a long time. In the end, she concluded by reasserting her forward’s dominance in the league.
While Hammon put her weight on the former South Carolina player’s side, A’ja Wilson gave Becky Hammon her flowers for team leadership during the championship parade speech. The 2025 championship had been a test for their character, resilience, and nerves. The coach also acknowledged this and singled out the Fever Series as its most challenging series.
Becky Hammon Calls Caitlin Clark-Less Indiana Fever As Their Toughest Opponent
Despite the slow start to the season, the Aces rose to the second position in the standings with a record-breaking 16-game winning run. Suddenly, they were one of the favorites for the 2025 WNBA championship. Yet, one team that stretched them to the limits was Stephanie White’s Indiana Fever, and they did it without their star playmaker.
Recently, she was on the ‘Post Moves’ podcast, Becky Hammon talked about the toughest series she ever had and said, “Indiana actually was probably the hardest series I’ve been through. And you know what? It’s funny, Aliyah [Boston], you’re sitting there, but it’s like, I was pissed after Game 5. I’m sure you were more pissed. But we’re going to the finals, and then I went back and watched it. CT calls me, Candace [Parker], at like 3 in the morning. She’s like, you still mad? And I was like, no. I’m like, Indiana just played their as** off.”

Not only was Caitlin Clark out of the game, but the Fever team also played without other guards like Sophie Cunningham, Aari McDonald, and Sydney Colson. Kelsey Mitchell also got injured midway through the game, yet the side put extra effort to force overtime in the series decider.
