The New York Liberty fans had some high expectations when the team commenced its WNBA journey this season. Unfortunately, as the season progressed, it became evident that things were not going smoothly for Sandy Brondello and co. Shockingly, the Liberty front office decided to sack Brondello despite a decent season. Soon, the WNBA fans erupted over the Liberty’s decision to fire Brondello. Meanwhile, as the team searches for a new head coach, one addition might just change their fate in the coming season. And that is none other than Betnijah Laney-Hamilton.
The Liberty front office might have fired its head coach. But their vision with the team’s core remains the same. General Manager Jonathan Kolb stated the team will be built around Sabrina Ionescu, Breanna Stewart, and Jonquel Jones. And with the addition of Laney-Hamilton, things are only expected to get better.
Betnijah Laney-Hamilton Looks To Come In Handy For The New York Liberty
Laney-Hamilton had an unfortunate knee injury that kept her out of the entire season this year. However, the good news is that the 31-year-old is expected to make a full recovery before the upcoming season. What’s more intriguing is that Liberty had already suspended her contract. And with that, Laney-Hamilton’s exclusive negotiation rights for the 2026 season rest with the Liberty.

Now, coming to her impact on the team, the 31-year-old was a key figure in Liberty’s championship year. Although her knee injury curtailed her presence to only 28 games, Laney-Hamilton emerged as a key player in the lineup.

Surely, the addition of Laney-Hamilton looks to be solving a lot of problems for the Liberty. However, speaking of problems, the sacking of Brondello had a lot of negative reactions. New York Liberty General Manager Jonathan Kolb Explains Sandy Brondello Firing
The Phoenix Mercury proved to be too strong for the Liberty to get over. As a result, despite a valiant effort, Brondello and her girls had to bow out of the tournament. But what followed afterward was quite shocking. Despite having the players’ backing, the front office decided to sack head coach Brondello. As the tensions escalated, General Manager Kolb came up with an explanation.

“This decision was in no way punitive, nor was it reactive — but it’s instead rooted in being proactive. Nor was this decision based solely on the results this past season. Ultimately, we determined that evolution and innovation is what is needed at this time. This is not a results-based organization. This is not about not winning or winning. It’s about how do we position ourselves to be at the top of the league in a real sustainable way as the league does evolve in the ways we’re talking about on the floor,” Kolb said in the press conference.
Thus, it is evident that things are looking quite complicated with the Liberty. Now, fans will see whether Laney-Hamilton’s inclusion can change the Liberty’s fate.
