The current expansion team, Golden State Valkyries, was recently valued at $500 million, the most for a women’s team franchise. This is a clear indication of the league’s expansion and growth. Looking at the sea of new fans moving towards the ‘W’, Boston also made an offer for the Connecticut Sun leadership, who expressed a desire to sell their stakes.
But it’s just bidding and waiting for approval from the league. Yet the City mayor is excited to promote his city’s chances and hint to the league to fasten the process.
Boston Mayor Hints At Desperation To Land WNBA Team
Boston already hosts the NBA’s top side, ‘The Celtics’. The franchise won a record 18 championships in the league. However, the current stage of the WNBA is a very lucrative and attractive opportunity for investors. The growth is exponential, and returns are quick for them at the moment.
With the Mohegan Group showing interest in selling its stake in the Connecticut franchise, Boston Celtics minority owner Steve Pagliuca came up with the matching offer. The offer could also relocate the franchise to Boston. The mayor of the City, Michelle Wu, is aware of the situation and talks about the City’s preparations to welcome the WNBA team.
“I know this is a decision that sits with the WNBA itself and the league. But the City of Boston is ready to do whatever we could to welcome them. This would mean just filling of a gap that I think the City feels very much that we don’t have a WNBA team in the City of champions. Also, it would just be essential for our young people, as well as the mentorship and the excitement that that would provide. So we are eagerly hoping that the process steps might go this way because this is something that Boston needs,” the Mayor mentioned in his interview.

While it’s a big decision for the team and fanbase, Boston is ready to make it happen as soon as possible. According to the Boston Globe, Pagliuca’s group has agreed to pay an extra $100 million to relocate the team. Importantly, the TD Garden is not a new venue for the Sun, who played a few regular-season games there.

WNBA Technicalities Holding Connecticut Sun Deal
The amount offered is massive. And Boston is a bigger market with an established set-up and environment for basketball. But the deal is not through yet. One questionable part of the deal is the relocation decision, as well as the valuation. While the Cleveland and other recent expansion teams went for $450 million, Boston didn’t make any bid.

Moreover, as per the league sources, “relocation decisions are made by the WNBA Board of Governors and not by individual teams.” Boston might have to spend more cash to meet both requirements.
