Fans fill WNBA arenas to watch the Indiana Fever games, anywhere in the country. The attractive part of their game is Caitlin Clark. The guard is a prime example of breathtaking passing, eye-catching ball handling, and, most importantly, her range shooting. She still holds the record for the most three-pointers made (122) in a WNBA rookie season.
CC made a name for herself with her logo threes, which made the ‘W’ rethink defensive strategies while playing against the Indiana Fever team. Sadly, the same record-setting ‘three-pointers’ are now her nightmares.
Caitlin Clark Makes ‘Unwanted’ History
Ever since entering the WNBA, the former Iowa star has been breaking records nearly in every game. The Rookie of the Year winner had 66 votes out of 67, missing out on being the first unanimous winner of the accolade. But the second season has been completely opposite to her first season’s performance.
The ‘queen of three-pointers’ is currently struggling to bank her trademark baskets. She made only three 3-pointers from 28 attempts in the last four games. That’s 10.7% conversion, the worst in WNBA history with 25+ attempts. CC blanked in two games, against the Valkyries (June 19) and against the Storm (June 24), from 13 attempts.

With over 37% efficiency in college and 34% in her first season in ‘W’, this is a poor shooting performance for the 23-year-old star. In the 2025 season, her shooting percentages are down to 30% in nine games. This is a big concern for the championship-aspiring Fever team, which is heavily dependent on their star rookie’s shooting rhythm.
Possible Reasons For Caitlin Clark’s Shooting Woos
Even though Stephanie White’s prized asset is currently finding it challenging to make threes, she is making it up with some mid-range shots and layups. The guard is averaging 17.4 points, five rebounds, 8.9 assists, and 1.5 steals per game in the 2025 season. The numbers are close to her rookie season averages, but a significant downgrade is her three-point shooting.

There are several reasons for this ‘issue’. The first one and the most obvious one is her injuries. She suffered a left quadriceps injury and then a groin injury to the same leg. CC also explained that injuries had been difficult for her.
Secondly, the opponents also want to make the three-pointers difficult for the Fever guard. Valkyries played the best defense against her, and their HC, Natalie Nakase, explained her tactics.

“I mean, you guys saw what we’re doing. We know [Clark] doesn’t like physicality. We know she wants to get to that left stepback. I watched her at Iowa, she loves that left stepback, it’s almost like a layup for her. So we were just making sure she wasn’t getting into rhythm and then that she was seeing multiple bodies.” Natalie Nakase explained the strategy to the media in a post-game interview.
Another point to consider is the time CC plays as a primary ball handler. Coach White is looking to experiment with different players taking over the responsibility, letting her star shooter free, and making baskets off the passes. Many criticized this idea, demanding that the HC should put the 2024 rookie back at the PG position. Whatever the reason for the struggles, Caitlin Clark and her team need to find the solution quickly.
