Close games require closer attention to detail and perfect play execution. While this applies to players, officials must also take note. The officiating in the league has been a burning issue so far, and a recent game between the LA Sparks and New York Liberty spurred controversy. Sabrina Ionescu was annoyed with one particular decision.
The star’s angry reaction went viral. She dared the official to give her a technical foul for her animated reaction and constant bashing. The camera caught the whole incident as Sab lost her control.
Sabrina Ionescu Caught Challenging Referee For A Technical Foul
The visitors had a four-point lead midway through the third quarter. The Liberty guard played quick give and go with center Jonquel Jones, who handed it back to the sharpshooter and set a screen to provide space for the 28-year-old. Just as ‘Sab’ took to the shot, the referee whistled for an ‘illegal screen’. Ironically, the three-pointer went in, but was wiped out due to the foul called.
After hearing the decision from the arena commentary, the scorer got mad. She argued with the referee and later dared the official to give her a technical foul for her behavior and visibly saying- “Tech me.”
The referee gave her a tech foul as requested and per the rules. Ironically, the decision impacted the game’s result, with the hosts losing by just two points. The former Oregon star led the scorers with 30 points. Rickea Jackson powered the Sparks to a famous win with 24 points.

Additionally, players like Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese received technical fouls for responses to the referee’s decisions on the court. Fans blasted the league over poor officiating standards and used social media to let their voice reach the authorities. Now, the Liberty Guard, known for her blunt and open replies, once again reignited the issue she spoke about in the past.

“Officiating is a lot different. When you watch the NBA or men’s college, your star players get any call. You can touch them with a fingernail, they’re going to the free throw line. In the W, they don’t care. You can be averaging 30, you can be coming off the bench, you’re not really getting the benefit of the doubt on a whistle. It’s hard-nosed, physical, there are no hand-check calls,” the guard said in an interview.
However, the league is working towards a better environment for the ‘W’ players. They might even add this concern to raise the league’s standards.
