The college basketball season is one of the favorites among fans due to its unpredictability and excitement. Even though there are a few ‘top teams’ who are hard to count out, the March Madness often provides very unpredictable results. Spectators and analysts get to see a glimpse of such shock as the West Virginia Mountaineers won against the Duke Blue Devils behind Celia Riviere’s performance.
Fans witnessed Audi Crooks’ record-breaking game and Liv McGill’s historic outing, but the French star topped it all with the impact of her game and result against the top team in NCAA Division I.
Celia Riviere Delivers For West Virginia
The unseeded Mountaineers were up against the 15th-seeded Duke. Both sides had different starts to the season, yet the Duke were the favorites in the game, especially after their four starter got marching orders from the referee following an on-court scuffle.

That’s when Celia Riviere got the chance to shine, finishing the game with 12 points, eight rebounds, and three assists in 22 minutes. All these were her season-high numbers, helping the side to record the 57-49 win. The Mountaineers are 4-0 so far in the season, while Duke has lost two games in the opening four games.

While she showcased some offensive prowess on the floor, her defensive presence of mind was also noteworthy. She received her fourth foul, with just over six minutes left in the game, and yet she avoided fouling out as the team was down to its last five players.

Even though starter Sydney Shaw was the top performer for the side, with 16 points, seven rebounds, three assists, one steal, and one block, the reserve player definitely deserves much credit for their supporting yet impactful game. Her performance against the Duke might force coach Mark Kellogg to rethink his strategy with the lineup.
Celia Riviere Ready For Bigger Role At West Virginia Mountaineers
While all eyes are mostly on the top teams and top prospects for the 2026 WNBA draft, players like Riviere clearly showed how role players can win games for their side. After shining for the NX Florida State in the NJCAA, the change of program affected her game time. The 6-foot-3 forward was a key player in Florida State, playing in all games as a starter.
Averaging 10 points and 5.5 rebounds per game in 65 games, she won the Region VII Tournament Most Outstanding Player and also the NJCAA championship. At the Mountaineers, though, she played just over 12 minutes and averaged 3.3 points and 2,3 rebounds per game.
Although the stats in the ongoing season remained the same, her performance against Duke might be an excellent sign for HC Kellogg to hand her more responsibility in her final year.
