The Chicago Sky reached the peak of their WNBA performance when they won the championship back in 2021. With the hopes soaring after that, the path for the Sky has become extremely clouded. Despite the induction of Angel Reese to the side, the franchise has seemingly hit rock bottom. And now, as yet another season came to a disappointing end, fans were pretty much agitated. They even called for General Manager Jeff Pagliocca to be fired.
Sky is dealing with a lot at the moment. While the team has performed poorly, injuries have plagued them throughout the season. Adding further to their woes, the controversy surrounding the star rookie has sparked rumors of Sky possibly parting ways with Reese.
Chicago Sky’s Campaign Came To A Saddening End
Sky had its worst season last year. And while the fans hoped for a swift turnaround this year, things only got worse. Losing a plethora of games this year, the team ended the season with yet another sombre defeat. Playing against the New York Liberty, the Sky fell 91-86. And looking at the surrender, a packed Wintrust Arena did not shy away from expressing its frustration.

Throughout the game, there were messages and chants from the fans citing dissatisfaction about the management. The fans came up with messages like, “#Free5,” and “We’re tired of mediocrity #selltheteam.” But things took a serious turn when, during the third quarter, the entire stadium went off against the general manager, Pagliocca. Asking for the termination of the general manager, the crowd wanted a drastic change in the management.

Coming back to Sky, this was their 34th loss of the season. With Tyler Marsh coming in as the new coach, things went horribly wrong for him. After all, no one would want to finish with a 10-34 win-loss record. Meanwhile, to add further to the problem, the rift with Reese is only getting wider. Reese’s decision to skip the final game drew fan criticism. And with the WNBA realm buzzing with the Reese controversy, Fever star Sophie Cunningham made her feelings known.
Sophie Cunningham Delivers Bold Verdict On Angel Reese-Sky Controversy
The last thing that the Sky wanted was to get into a tussle with their own team member. And that is exactly what happened when the Chi-town Barbie publicly pointed fingers at her teammates. In a statement to the Chicago Tribunal, the 23-year-old stated that, apart from her and Kamilla Cardoso, none of the players might return next season. She also warned management that she would leave the team if they didn’t add quality players soon.

Now, it is understandable that such a dismal run had made Reese frustrated. But according to Cunningham, one must always keep the honor of the team as the first priority. “No, that’s not great. I get when you’re losing and it’s been a frustrating season, everyone is feeling those emotions. And when I say everyone, it’s not just her. I’m sure her teammates feel it, her coaches feel it, the organization, the fans — literally everyone feels that. There’s some things that you can’t say. I think one of my biggest things is I’m a very team-first person. I always put the team before my feelings, and I think that should be a standard,” Cunningham said.
All in all, the Chicago Sky situation is seemingly getting worse. Now, fans are eager to see how well they can cope with the situation and bounce back next season.
