The New York Liberty was the last franchise to fill the head coach position in the WNBA, having gone through a number of applicants. Finally, late in November, the Liberty hired Chris DeMarco as its head coach. Even though he was the new name in the list, the Liberty wasted no time hiring the coach.
Even though he will join the team in January, the 40-year-old is already excited about the opportunity at hand and has recently shared his plans for the 2024 champions.

Chris DeMarco’s Approach Towards The New York Liberty
The New York Liberty couldn’t repeat its 2024 form and finished well below the expected top-three position, and also was out of the competition as early as the first round. The front office replaced its champion coach quickly and replaced her with the Warriors’ assistant coach.
“I did just a little bit of research. It was a no-brainer that this is the best opportunity in the WNBA. A good championship franchise and this was what I wanted and that’s why I’m here right now,” DeMarco said on joining the team.

He added that even though he is currently busy with the Warriors’ commitments, he is taking time to read and understand more about the Liberty franchise. He followed the team, but as a fan, he will now have to change his approach and think like a coach.

Interestingly, Liberty was considering assistant Sonia Raman as a replacement for Sandy Brondello, whose technique is stat-based. However, DeMarco is now looking to implement his approach in the game.
Chris DeMarco Ready To Implement Player-Driven Approach
The talented coach spent 14 seasons with the Golden State Warriors, making it to the NBA Finals six times and winning four titles with Steve Kerr’s team. Although he was an assistant coach at the organization, his impact and coaching style impressed players and other staff members.

On building a winning team, DeMarco said, “I’m really collaborative, it’s not just me or my voice… This is going to be a player-driven team. We’re going to get with the leaders of this team, with the entire roster… I’ve always found that player-driven teams have more success.”
The WNBA shouldn’t be different for DeMarco, who will be looking to make an immediate impact with a talented side, and veterans are ready to return to the organization in free agency. However, there is still some work to be done to succeed with the Liberty.
