The WNBA is expanding. Owing to its recent boom, the league is adding two new teams, Toronto Tempo and the Portland Fire, into the mix. And that’s not all. In what is an exciting prospect for the league, Serena Williams recently shared her vision for a possible Toronto ownership. However, in recent days, the WNBA realm has been buzzing with the Connecticut sale news.
In an update, the Sun’s sale was confirmed for a $300 million valuation to the Fertitta family. Now, while such a heavy valuation for a women’s basketball team signals progress, it also means the franchise will relocate to Houston. And this will create some serious problems for the league.

Will The Relocation Of The Connecticut Sun Have A Negative Impact On WNBA?
As of now, the Sun’s fans will have one more season to enjoy their favorite team playing. But from the next year onwards, the action will shift to Houston. Renamed as the Houston Comets, the team will start a fresh new journey. However, this might result in some adverse ripple effects within the league.
With the Sun gone, the league will lack a team in the Northeast. And remember, this very region has spent a significant time tirelessly working to churn out some quality female basketball players for the league. It is now a full-fledged hub brimming with women’s basketball talent. Unfortunately, the absence of a team from the region could severely impact that supply line.

With no motivation, young females might lose interest in pursuing the sport. And if someone cuts off such a rich line of supply, it will hurt the league’s quality too.

There could also have been another major fiasco. Even before the new CBA was agreed upon, a lot of fans went ahead and purchased season tickets for the Suns game. Luckily for them, this year there will be no relocation.
Meanwhile, talking about the latest move, UConn Huskies head coach Geno Auriemma made a stern statement.
Geno Auriemma Unhappy With Connecticut Sun’s Sale

Connecticut’s relocation to Houston means that the UConn Huskies are the only women’s basketball team from the state. And according to Auriemma, such a move has created a void within the women’s basketball realm.
Sharing his reaction, the Huskies head coach said, “Well, yeah. I mean, I think the people at Mohegan Sun, I think they stepped up when they were needed. And brought a team to Connecticut, as Connecticut deserves to have a team. Because we’re a proven… where people will support women’s basketball. So then, now [with the Sun] moving, I think it leaves a void.”
