Courtney Williams seems to have really taken last year’s WNBA finals loss personally. As the New York Liberty reigned supreme and clinched the title in 2024, the wound seems to have ignited a fire. And that fire is pretty much visible in Williams’ eyes. With the Minnesota Lynx looking indomitable at the moment, the 31-year-old has once again made some controversial comments against the Liberty.
Williams is no stranger to controversies. Whether getting her entry denied at a nightclub or putting forth her unfiltered opinions, the Lynx star has done it all. But this time around, she also backed up her trash-talking with a sublime performance on the court.
Courtney Williams Drops Season High As Minnesota Lynx Topples New York Liberty
Williams had a memorable day at the Target Center recently. Facing off against the Liberty, Minnesota managed to win 86-80. This was their third consecutive victory against the Liberty this season. The last time New York was able to get the better of the Lynx was in the finals last year. However, the victory celebrations just doubled for the 31-year-old Lynx star.
Williams posted a season-high 26 points that helped her team significantly get over the line. She also chipped in with five assists and five rebounds each to further consolidate her position on the team. Meanwhile, as Williams and her squad rejoiced after the game, the WNBA veteran opened up about how she felt playing against the Liberty.
“The fire is there they beat us last year, I don’t need more ammunition. I don’t like them, I love them as people… but when it comes to basketball, no it’s nothing, I don’t want them to win,” said Williams.

She went on to elaborate on her statement. The Lynx’s star clarified that her rivalry with the Liberty players was purely competitive. She does not hold any personal grudges against any of them. And since Minnesota lost last year, Williams now wants Sabrina Ionescu and her team to lose it all. This was not the first time Williams had taken a shot at Liberty. Only recently has she made cryptic remarks about New York after their recent trade of star point guard Jaylyn Sherrod.

Courtney Williams Goes Off On New York Liberty After Jaylyn Sherrod Trade
Sherrod was finding it difficult to adjust to the Liberty. Thus, after spending a couple of seasons in New York, she got traded to the Minnesota Lynx. The young Birmingham-born forward was really joyous about the call she received from Cheryl Reeves’ Team. And while such an addition came as a pleasant surprise, the manner in which Williams welcomed her was quite a veiled jab.
“Jaylyn is with the good guys now. She left that punk a** team and she’s with the good guys now,” said Williams.

Surely, it is evident from the 31-year-old’s comments that she does not want to settle for anything less than a championship run. And with the Minnesota Lynx looking unstoppable at the moment, it now remains to be seen whether Williams’ dreams can come true this time around.
