The Minnesota Lynx hosted the Indiana Fever for the 2025 WNBA Commissioner’s Cup final. Ahead of the game, the Lynx were heavy favorites with the number 1 seed in the league. They were even unbeaten at the target center in 2025. To make things even ‘easier’, the Indiana Fever side was without playing injured Caitlin Clark. All signs were positive for Napheesa Collier, Courtney Williams, and co.
Even Courtney Williams’ father, Donald Williams, made bold claims regarding the game’s result. When interviewed on the courtside, he was pumped up for the game and confident about his team’s victory. But his words became his enemies as the Fever registered an emphatic win to claim the Commissioner’s Cup.
Fever’s Dominance Makes Mockery Of Courtney Williams’ Father’s Prediction
The Indiana Fever entered the game as underdogs with an 8-8 record in the league. The side struggled to find consistency in their results, losing some easy games while winning against more formidable opponents. Yet they topped the Eastern Conference to reach their first final of the 2025 WNBA Commissioner’s Cup.
Maybe it was beginner’s luck combined with the masterful defensive performance from the Fever side, but the Lynx were uncharacteristically struggling to find the net. On the other hand, Fever stayed offensively active, scoring 20+ points in each of the final three quarters. As a result, the defending champions were beaten (like last season), and Fever claimed a 74-59 victory at Target Center.

Interestingly, Courtney Williams’ father claimed that the Lynx would not only win the Commissioner’s Cup but also clinch the WNBA title. Historically, in the five editions of the Commissioner’s Cup, no champion has won the WNBA Finals. The Lynx team was the closest one last season, losing the Finals series 3-2 against the Liberty side.

Now that the Indiana Fever has the Commissioner’s Cup, all eyes will be on Caitlin Clark and Co. to break the jinx and win the WNBA championship. CC, known for her record-setting attitude, will aim to make Fever side only the second team to win both Commissioner’s Cup and WNBA championship in the same season.
Courtney Williams And Minnesota Lynx Will Look To Bounce Back From Defeat
A defeat at home in the final hurts more. But this could be the motivation for Courtney Williams and the team to come back stronger in the season. With 28 games still remaining in the regular season, the Lynx will look to hold on to the top spot in the league. First, it will give them a home-court advantage throughout the postseason games. The side is strong at Target Center with a fan base behind them.
Secondly, the top-seeded side has more chances of winning the WNBA championship. Liberty in 2024, Aces in 2022 and 23 clinched the titles from the top spot. MVP candidate Napheesa Collier was restricted to 33.3% shooting by the Fever’s defense. Courtney Williams shot 28.6% from the field, scoring just 11 points.
Their second-quarter scoring slum (7 points in 10 minutes) proved costly as the Lynx missed the opportunity to be the first side to win the Commissioner’s Cup for two seasons in a row. The talented team has shown great comebacks in the past. Similar performances will be needed to fulfill at least half of Courtney Williams’ father’s wish – winning the WNBA Title. Good thing about losing the Commissioner’s Cup? The runners-up mostly went on to win the WNBA Championship in the last two seasons.
