Courtney Williams has been one of the mainstays for the Minnesota Lynx this year. With some prominent displays of top-quality basketball, she played a major role in the Lynx’s status as the first to qualify for the playoffs. However, one of the highlights about her outside of her hardwood heroics is her coming out. And in a recent interview, she recalled how stunned her mother was the first time she heard it.
Williams had been struggling with her WNBA career previously. But thankfully, joining the Minnesota Lynx last year proved the ideal opportunity to revive the same. And she grabbed it with both hands. After ending up as the runner-up last season, the Lynx is now looking like a championship contender. Looking back at her journey, Williams had a lot to share.
Courtney Williams Shares How Stunned Her Mother Was After She Came Out
The Lynx’s guard recently recalled her basketball journey from childhood to the WNBA. Interacting with The Players’ Tribune, Williams walked down memory lane all the way back to college. The 31-year-old detailed how she revealed her sexuality to her mother while disclosing her relationship with her roommate. The WNBA star remembers how stunned her mother was, and she even left the room frustrated.

“My mama goes, “So what’s going on?” I’m like, “I don’t know.” If this was a movie, right here is where they would cut to my sister looking at me. Cut to me looking at my sister. Then cut to shorty over here bawling. “My mom is like, “Courtney, I’m going to ask you one more time.” I put my head down. I said, “Me and her have been dating.” When I tell you it felt like a bomb exploded in my heart…. Oh. My. God… My mom is shocked. She leaves the room,” said Williams.

Williams then went on to say how she and her roommate, about whom she told her mom, broke up shortly after. However, back in November 2024, the Lynx’s star and her longtime girlfriend, Shya, got engaged. Now then, on the hardwood, she is a live wire. And while Williams warned her opponents after Napheesa Collier’s comeback from injury, the 31-year-old also broke a Lynx record recently.

Courtney Williams Delivers A Stellar Performance Against The Indiana Fever
Back in late August, the Minnesota Lynx locked horns with the Indiana Fever. Looking desperate for a victory to clinch a playoff spot, a Caitlin Clark-less Fever looked quite dominant. In fact, squaring off against the number one side in the league, the Fever gave a tough fight. As the Lynx managed to squeeze out a 97-85 win, the charge was led by none other than Courtney Williams.

The 31-year-old proved once again why she is such a prized possession for the Lynx. Putting on a stellar performance, Williams dropped 14 points along with 10 assists. Owing to her scintillating showing, the Lynx guard also broke a record. With her 10 assists of the evening, Williams took the tally of her assists to 230. And this was the single-season franchise record for most assists by an individual player. Thus, it is quite evident that the star guard is an inseparable part of the squad. And with the playoffs approaching, the onus will be on Williams to play a major role and guide her team to a championship run.
