Despite the chaos surrounding the WNBA, including the CBA standoff, criticism, and competition from new leagues, many cities continue to seek alignment with the league and contribute to the growth of women’s basketball. One such city is Houston, which has been part of the league since its inception and even won the first four championships. Its legendary star, Cynthia Cooper, gets honest about having a WNBA team in Houston.
Following the recent expansion team’s announcements, Houston’s WNBA comeback dream remains alive as Connecticut Sun relocation talks intensify heading into the 2026 season.
Cynthia Cooper Gives Her Opinion On WNBA Team In Houston
The Houston Comets were the dominant team in the league, winning four championships in their first four seasons. However, they had to wrap up the franchise due to a poor response from the spectators. The 62-year-old who led the team in those dominant seasons, notes one key complication still lingering over Houston’s WNBA future, though.

“I don’t know about Toyota Center. It might be a little too big for a WNBA franchise except when Caitlin Clark or Angel Reese come to town. But I know the Houston Rockets and Fertitta, they have the expertise in place to choose the correct venue,” Cynthia Cooper told the Chronicle.

WNBA Legend Cynthia Cooper Says Angel Reese Reminds Her of Herself
The record-setting champion is happy with the current crop of players in the league and highlighted that watching Angel Reese gets her back to her game play. Cooper was a renowned rebounder in the game, and it was obvious to see her praised as another record-setting rebounder.
“She reminds me of me when I was starting out and I didn’t care. Say what you want to say. I’m bringing my A-game tonight. You’re gonna have to stop me from getting all these rebounds. Stop talking about how I get the rebounds. Stop me if you can. And I love that attitude of hers and how she’s continuing to get better every single game,” said Cooper.
"She reminds me of me."
