The Dallas Wings have been reeling with a lot of problems recently. Owing to a dismal season, the franchise’s brand value has plummeted. Despite Paige Bueckers’ magic, the Wings’ 2026 power rankings have hit rock bottom. Coming into the tournament this year, the Wings had a lot of dreams. With Chris Koclanes at the helm and the No. 1 draft pick coming their way, the team wanted to soar high. Unfortunately, while that did not happen, the Wings are now in search of a new head coach. And USF’s Jose Fernandez seems to be the one at the moment.
Owing to a dismal 10-34 finish this year, there were rumors regarding the longevity of Koclanes. The Wings dismissed him last month and began searching for a new coach. And with strong rumors coming in, it seems to be a matter of time before Fernandez’s name is made official.
Can Jose Fernandez Take Dallas Wings To Glory?
During the offseason, there have been a lot of rumors regarding who the Wings’ next coach will be. At one point, Wings was rumored to sign Coby Karl as their head coach. However, while that speculation did not hold true, Fernandez will likely be the final choice. According to ESPN’s Alexa Phillipou, the Dallas front office will reportedly announce Fernandez this Friday.

Coming to his CV as a coach, the 53-year-old has been doing a fabulous job at the University of South Florida. Taking charge of the women’s program, Fernandez has some incredible achievements to his name. He has orchestrated as many as 10 NCAA appearances for the Bulls. Fernandez also won a WNIT title in 2009 and two American Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament championships.

Surely, with an overall record of 485-317, the 53-year-old is the winningest coach of the program. Well, it looks like Dallas has things sorted with their head coach. Now, they would need to turn their attention towards building a solid team. And as per the Wings GM, Curt Miller, they would build around Bueckers.

Curt Miller Wants To Build His Team Around Paige Bueckers
Despite the Wings having a forgettable season, Bueckers looked like the only silver lining for the team. Coming in as a rookie, the 23-year-old showed some pro-level talent. She not only took the Rookie of the Year award, but also impacted the league with her stunning play. In her maiden WNBA year, Bueckers averaged a whopping 19.2 points, 5.4 assists, and 47.4% shooting. Thus, it was no surprise when the Dallas general manager stated that he wanted to build his team revolving around the star rookie.

“I struggled early in my career to rip the Band-Aid off when there wasn’t a perfect fit or maybe there was a move that was a little bit scary to make. Sometimes failing fast is beneficial,” Miller said. “Bring other great players to play with her [Paige Bueckers], alongside her, and build this Dallas team into what we ultimately hope is a championship.”
Thus, it is evident that the Wings are in a rebuilding phase. Now, fans will be eager to see what more changes they will implement while re-constructing their team.
