The South Carolina Gamecocks had been one of the dominant sides lately and matched shoulders with some of the bigs in the league. While the tallest franchise with the most NCAA championships is the UConn Huskies, Dawn Staley is looking to match Geno Auriemma in the record books.
Both competitive coaches, though, literally went head-to-head in the 2026 NCAA Final Four game and other staff members had to intervene. Although Auriemma later apologized for his behavior, fans are still looking for answers over the ‘triggering’ moment.

Story Behind Geno Auriemma And Dawn Staley Altercation
The South Carolina Gamecocks and UConn Huskies are two of the respected programs in NCAAW, and their ‘celebrity’ coach are a key reason behind the same. With his standards and aspirations, he is highly competitive and never backs down from any challenge. But a simple handshake caused a massive misunderstanding, leading to a huge drama on the floor.
Cameras caught Geno Auriemma approaching Staley at the end of the game, and he clearly looked disappointed. But as he shook hands with the 51-year-old coach, the first words that came from his mouth were not ‘well played’ or ‘congratulations’, but he said, “You didn’t shake my hand at the beginning of the game.”

While it went on for a while and other staff members also intervened, separating two coaches, things went out of hand by then. Auriemma once again emphasized the ‘handshake’ in the press conference as well and mentioned that he waited for three minutes for it.
Ironically, footage caught Staley meeting and greeting the 72-year-old coach and his staff well before the game. The South Carolina coach mentioned that she will speak on the topic after the championship game.
Dawn Staley Focusing On Target
Just before the championship game, such instances are disturbing and distracting too, but not for Coach Staley, who used defeat against Caitlin Clark as motivation and has been an unstoppable force since then.

Speaking about the incident, she said, “Nothing, nothing can derail us, or me, from staying with the task at hand. There are a lot of distractions that are placed in your life. You’re either going to address them and let it overcome or you stick with the task at hand.”
Interestingly, Staley predicted the championship right after the loss in the conference tournament and now has to defeat the UCLA Bruins to fulfil that prophecy.
