Dawn Staley logged onto social media Wednesday morning and let the emojis do the talking. Two laughing faces, a question about trolling, and a line about swagger returning. The South Carolina coach’s post was all over everybody’s feed.
The spark came from UConn’s account, not Staley’s phone. A photo of Geno Auriemma posing with his latest NCAA trophy carried a caption that played on words. What looked like shade to some was just clever timing to others.
Either way, Staley was just unapologetically being herself, and her reply kept the conversation rolling into the offseason.
Who Was Dawn Staley Targeting With Her Latest Tweet?
UConn posted the Auriemma picture Tuesday night. The social media post was strategically timed, given the whirlwind of drama going on in the college basketball scene. Only recently, Staley got an endorsement for a WNBA coaching role for an upcoming team.

The caption read, “We heard everyone was really excited about a coach photo shoot? Here you go.” However, the joke tied back to Paige Bueckers’ weekend in London. The Dallas Wings rookie did a shoot for the luxury brand Coach and mentioned it during a TV spot at Arsenal’s stadium.

While fans begged for the photos, UConn delivered a pun instead, using Auriemma’s trophy pose as the punchline. But Staley saw something else.
“Oh I heard someone was trolling? Now that they got their swagger back,” she wrote along with three laughing emojis.

However, Gamecocks fans cheered the burn, reading it as a nod to UConn’s 82-59 win in last April’s national title game, notably the Huskies’ first championship since 2016. Huskies supporters fired back, pointing out the post had nothing to do with Staley or South Carolina.
Dawn Staley Clapped Back With An Insider Joke
The backlash rolled in quickly, and the comments accused Staley of missing the joke. But being a veteran herself, she didn’t let it sit. Almost immediately came the follow-up.
“everyone thinks everything is about them? Inside joke so come on inside. Oops the door of the church is now closed,” her next tweet read.
🤣🤣🤣 everyone thinks everything is about them? Inside joke so come on inside. Oops the door of the church is now closed. ✌🏾

The church line shut the thread, framing the whole exchange as private humor lost on outsiders.
Staley has played this game before. She keeps posts short, lets emojis carry weight, and watches the timeline argue. This time, the misfire, if it was one, linked back to the Coach brand mix-up.
