A week ago, the Los Angeles Sparks were on a hot winning run, making them a strong contender for the 2025 WNBA playoffs. Forward Dearica Hamby talked about the team’s mentality for the tough stretch. But back-to-back losses put them under pressure to win the next few games to stay in the challenge for a top-eight finish.
The side is now ninth in the league with a 17-20 record. The star forward once again gave her opinion on the team’s chances for the qualification.
Dearica Hamby Gives Opinion On The Los Angeles Sparks’ Chances Of Qualification
With seven games left and a 2.5-game deficit from the eighth-placed Golden State Valkyries, the three-time champions are in big trouble. They don’t even have a game left against the expansion team to cut a significant margin deficit in one game, which makes the situation even worse. HC Lynne Roberts expressed her thoughts on the player injuries as the team had its complete squad for the first time in a long time.

But the former Sixth Woman of the Year winner is optimistic about the chances. Talking to the media, she pointed out the ‘math’ to qualify for the postseason and maintained that the team needs to focus on one game at a time.
“One game at a time. We got Sunday, Washington, we’re trying to split the season series with them. We can kind of still control our own destiny, five-and-two and make a shot at this. So turn the page and keep going,” the forward told reporters.
As per Hamby, if the team wins five out of the next seven games, it will have a 0.500 record and a chance to qualify for the postseason.

Their remaining opponents include the in-form sides like the Las Vegas Aces, Phoenix Mercury, and Atlanta Dream. The veteran forward needs to deliver to live up to the massive expectations and words.
Dearica Hamby Needs to Be Consistent In The Final Stretch
The team is heavily dependent on the scoring of three players: Rickea Jackson, Kelsey Plum, and Hamby. The 31-year-old forward has been very inconsistent in recent games. She scored 25+ points against the Mercury and the Mystics, putting the team closer to the opponent’s tally. Later, her struggles against the Fever and Wings put pressure on other players.

She holds the second-best record for the most 20+ point double-doubles in the league, only behind the reigning MVP A’ja Wilson. The former Wake Forest player started in every game for the LA team and averages 18 points per game. She also leads the team in steals (1.6 steals) and rebounds (7.8 rebounds), contributing heavily to the team’s recent success. HC Lynne Roberts will be hoping for a similar or even better performance from the star in the upcoming seven games.
