The WNBA is currently facing a period of stagnation. With the CBA deal garnering a nationwide backlash, the league is experiencing tumultuous times. However, despite all the negatives, the league is also growing simultaneously. The WNBA recorded its highest-ever viewership this season.
And not only that, there are several expansion teams currently on the wings. As of now, the likes of Toronto and Portland are slated to make their debut in the next year. Ahead of the season, teams like the Toronto Tempo are already making some big headlines.
Meanwhile, on the positive side, Detroit has recently taken a major step toward funding a potential WNBA team in the future.

Detroit Invests Big in Proposed WNBA Franchise
Detroit is very much interested in a future WNBA team. And for that, they are currently leaving no stone unturned. In a recent development, the quasi-public Detroit Downtown Development Authority announced the approval of a substantial fund. According to reports, officials will allocate a total of $5 million to renovate Little Caesars Arena in preparation for the potential arrival of a WNBA franchise in Detroit.
Currently, the total estimated cost of the renovation is $8.5 million. However, the city will reimburse only $5 million, and it will pay the amount in cash. Detailing the renovations further, planners are placing heavy emphasis on a state-of-the-art home locker room and a dedicated locker room for game officials.
Speaking about the same, Richard Haddad, the COO of the Pistons, said, “It’s to support the renovation of the arena to accommodate the WNBA basketball team and to make sure they have first-class dedicated facilities just like the Pistons and the Red Wings do.”

Surely, this is a great initiative and a positive step towards the Pistons’ attempt to get into the WNBA. Meanwhile, as the franchise is yet to decide on a name, Haddad explained that they are open to exploring.
Detroit Pistons Open For Suggestions Regarding Franchise Name
Ever since the WNBA announced the addition of three new teams in 2030, excitement has been sky-high. And bringing back the memories, Detroit did have a team previously named the Detroit Shock.
Thus, with the team making a comeback, interest regarding their new name has been significant. Piston’s COO Haddad said, “The name has not yet been determined. We are exploring multiple options, including the Detroit Shock, as hopefully, some or all of you know, was the name of the team that was here before. We’re open to suggestions if you have any, but we’re excited to continue to work through that process.”
