The Phoenix Mercury had to dig deep in Game 4 against the Minnesota Lynx as the league leaders put up a fight in the elimination game at the PHX Arena. But the Hosts survived an upset with the help of veteran star DeWanna Bonner.
In the press conference, she discussed making it to the WNBA finals and also the ‘hate’ she has received in recent years. Earlier in the season, Kahleah Copper blasted the Indiana Fever fans for booing Bonner at Gainbridge Fieldhouse Arena. But as per the forward, she is still suffering from the hate.
DeWanna Bonner Confesses About Cyberbullying
With Napheesa Collier and Cheryl Reeve out for Game 4 at the PHX Arena, many expected an easy win for the Mercury. But the Lynx made it difficult for the hosts, taking up a 13-point lead going into the fourth quarter. Alyssa Thomas and co once again had a strong fourth quarter (31-13) to clinch the series and advance to the finals.

While this would be the franchise’s sixth WNBA Final, Bonner will be part of three of those. When an interviewer asked her about the feeling of returning to the Mercury and to the final, she had a very unexpected answer.
“It’s been tough. I’ve been through a lot, especially the cyberbullying. Just thankful for my teammates, my family, my kids,” Bonner said.
While the 38-year-old forward received much love from every franchise and fanbase she played for, her recent breakup with the Indiana Fever was very controversial. Although both player and franchise showed no ‘bad feelings’ for one another, fans are still unaware of the reason for her departure.

She was constantly targeted during the game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse Arena while the Mercury players showed support for Bonner. Sophie Cunningham even expressed a desire to see Bonner retire before the fanbase keeps pinpointing her. The Fever forward also added that she was also amused by Bonner’s departure as the player showed no signs of discomfort, nor did she communicate with the team.
But now playing for her first franchise, the two-time champion is setting up records and proving to be the difference maker.
DeWanna Bonner Once Again Proves To Be The X-Factor
Wearing the Mercury Jersey brought up a different beast in the 2009 rookie. She made an immediate impact with her return. Even Bonner set a WNBA playoff rebounding history, helping the side defeat the Liberty in Game 3. And now in the elimination game against the Mercury, she scored 13 points with six rebounds.
Nate Tibbetts uses his experienced forward extensively in the fourth quarter, and the side excels in the final 10 minutes. Her clutch plays had been very effective for the team, although she is averaging just below eight points in the playoffs this season.
Now with a place in the finals, Bonner will be confident of clinching her third title as she is undefeated in WNBA finals with the Phoenix side.
