The Minnesota Lynx have already become the first team to secure a 2025 WNBA Playoff spot. But on the contrary, their arch rivals, the New York Liberty, are looking to have lost the way mid-season. Looking to defend their title, New York had quite a strong start to the season. They remained in second place for a long time before slipping further down recently. And this sudden dip in form is what has left Emma Meesseman concerned.
Surely, there are a lot of reasons to be worried. The league has now entered the business end, and most of the teams are trying to push for the playoffs. Unfortunately, with back-to-back losses, Liberty has fallen to fifth on the table. And despite trying to reinforce the team, Meesseman has a lot of reasons to worry.
Emma Meesseman Wants New York Liberty To Brush Off Complacency
Meesseman joined the Liberty after three and a half years of inactivity. And the sole reason for her comeback was to help the team retain their WNBA championship. Unfortunately, as things have turned out to be quite grim, the 32-year-old has some strict message for her team. Speaking with The Post, the WNBA veteran stated how Liberty must not remain happy with just a win here and there. Instead, they must focus to unlock their full potential and look to do better.

“I’m just looking at the result and looking at the result, it’s always a tough game. I feel like we’re making it very hard on ourselves sometimes. So I don’t think we should be too happy with just having a win. … I’m not going to give grades because it doesn’t matter because I think we can do better,” said Meesseman.

Now this is a message that her Liberty teammates need to take seriously. Losing against the Chicago Sky and Atlanta Dream in consecutive games, the road to the playoffs is looking pretty rocky for the defending champions. Meanwhile, joining the team, the 32-year-old has been quite impressive. Meesseman shone bright in her Liberty debut during a dominating Connecticut Sun win. The veteran star has dropped averages of 13.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 3.9 assists. Now then, having a knack for criticizing her team to play better, this is not the first time Meesseman has lashed out at her Liberty teammates.

Emma Meesseman Was Furious After Liberty’s Defeat To The Minnesota Lynx
The Minnesota Lynx taking on the Liberty has been the biggest highlight of the league. After all, these two teams were the ones that battled it out for glory last year. However, when the two sides met this time, New York looked quite lacklustre. While the Lynx had the game under control, the Liberty came out poorly in the second half. And this particular run of play resulted in the defending champions succumbing to a loss by eight points.

Soon after the defeat, Meesseman faced the media. And she did not look to be in a great mood. She blasted the team for not paying attention to details and almost messing up the basics of the game. She said, “The ones that definitely could be avoided were just, again, attention to detail — pass to the open side — or we were not always on the same page. It’s fundamentals, really. Maybe it’s not bad to just get back to the basics and how you learn as a kid.” Surely, with things turning out a bit complicated, the Liberty would surely need to pull their socks up right now.
