The South Carolina camp was all pumped up after the win over the UConn Huskies. Dawn Staley opened up on Caitlin Clark’s impact on fueling her pursuit of excellence. But playing against the top side was also a motivation to perform at the highest level. Geno Auriemma, on the other hand, kept faith in his star performers who stayed consistent throughout the season.
Her side did exactly what the coach expected: controlled the board and kept possession for a dominating victory over the defending champions. Yet, how the game ended was a shock for fans as both veteran coaches went rampant against each other.

Geno Auriemma Apologies After Heated Exchange With Dawn Staley
Cameras were in the technical area of the court as both coaches faced each other during the closing moments of the game. Suddenly, fans started making noise and cheering for their favorite coaches, as they went at each other and needed staff members to separate them. Auriemma took the first step and apologized publicly.
“There’s no excuse for how I handled the end of the game vs. South Carolina. It’s unlike what I do and what our standard is here at Connecticut. I want to apologize to the staff and the team at South Carolina. It was uncalled for in how I reacted. The story should be how well South Carolina played, and I don’t want my actions to detract from that. I’ve had a great relationship with their staff, and I sincerely want to apologize to them,” Auriemma said in a statement released by the university.

While the UConn coach came out clean in the statement, Dawn Staley said she will address the situation after the National Championship game. But fans already had Auriemma’s version as he explained the situation that led to the ugly scenes.
Geno Auriemma Gave Reasons For His ‘Improper’ Behavior
Even though the UConn Huskies lost the Final Four game, which snapped their undefeated run, too, the press conference was more interested in the clash between two legendary coaches.
In a postgame interview with Holly Rowe, Auriemma mentioned that Staley “rants and raves” at the officials and “calls the referees some names you don’t want to hear.”

Auriemma also claimed he waited at midcourt for about 3 minutes for a standard pregame handshake. However, Staley never approached. The coach had been very vocal about the ‘injustice’ around as he slammed the NCAA brackets before the Elite Eight games. But this time accepted his ‘misbehavior’.
