The UConn Huskies entered the season as champions and possibly are on their way to exiting the season as champions as well. The key reason for this assumption is the team’s unbeaten record. The first possible trophy might come on Monday, with Geno Auriemma taking his side to the Big East final against the Villanova Wildcats.
UConn Huskies built a substantial lead in the Big East with dominant early conference wins and continued their dominance to stretch their regular-season wins to 31. While unbeaten runs or seasons are not new to the 12-time champion coach, he recently reflected on his time at New York University.

Geno Auriemma Praised Hard Work Behind Winning Streaks
New York University, the two-time defending Division III champion, pushed its winning streak to 89 this weekend, and Auriemma hopes the Violets reach 112 to surpass UConn’s record set in 2017.
Talking about NYU’s record, he said, “Doing something exceptionally well and doing it every day that you have to do it is way, way, way more difficult than people think.” He mentioned there is no limitation on Division III or even Division 12; being consistent is very impressive, according to the coach.

The coach is part of the history of DI with 111 wins and understands the difficulty. UConn holds the record for the longest consecutive win streak in NCAA Division I women’s basketball history, with 111 consecutive wins from 2014 to 2017 under coach Geno Auriemma. The Huskies also hold the second- and third-longest streaks, with 90- and 70-game win streaks.

The Huskies’ dominance is not a recent one, but it has been a project over the last decade or so. ESPN’s Holly Rowe saw it as a reason for improving the quality of the league and other programs, too. While the veteran coach is at the heart of this change and surge, the coach is proud of his side but sees the 2024-25 team as better equipped.
In the interview, he said, “I don’t know that you take one of the top five players in the WNBA off your team and say you’re better. I don’t know how I can justify saying that. There are a lot of times when I watch us play and I say, that wouldn’t have happened if we had Paige … We’re a much different team than we were last year, correct. But to say that we’re a better team than we were last year? I don’t buy that.”

While one player didn’t drive the Huskies to the championship, her versatility and performance assured the coach of the victories.
