The Dallas Wings may have finally found somebody who can aid Paige Bueckers on the court. With just nine wins and 29 losses, they are having a dismal season this year. The Wings, having already been eliminated from the WNBA playoffs along with the Chicago Sky, have very little that they can do this year. However, what they can do is prepare a solid team for the next year. And bringing in Amy Okonkwo might just be the first step towards it, with teammate Haley Jones heaping praise on the 6’2” star.
It’s been only days since Okonkwo joined the Wings’ roster. Signing a 7-day contract, the 28-year-old was supposed to fill in for the injury-ridden, depleted side. However, after just a couple of games, the Wings star has made her mark and has made a strong case for herself as a regular in the squad.
Haley Jones Impressed With Amy Okonkwo After First Two Games
Coming off the bench in both games, the former TCU standout has shown promise. Making her debut against the Seattle Storm back on August 22, the new signee has earned praise from her teammates. And after two games, Okonkwo is averaging 10.0 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 1.0 assists. Speaking about how much impact the 28-year-old is having on the team, Jones recently could not help but term Okonkwo as a ‘bucket.’

“Amy’s an Olympian — she’s a bucket. She came out confident, hit threes, got to the rim, took the right shots, made the right reads. She’s been a great addition, and she and I have really clicked,” said Jones via DallasHoopsJournal.

Surely, the days are looking quite bright for the Dallas star. After all, joining the Wings feels like a homecoming of sorts for Okonkwo. Back in 2018, she worked as an intern for the Wings. Playing for TCU, too, Okonkwo had been phenomenal. She averaged 21.5 points and 9.3 rebounds as a senior. Meanwhile, despite the good news, Wings’ fate this year is unlikely to change. With Paige Bueckers’ rookie surge stumbling, head coach Chris Koclanes had some words for the officials.

Wings Coach Upset With WNBA Ref Despite Amy Okonkwo’s Surge
Okonkwo might have been putting up impressive numbers. Playing against the Golden State Valkyries recently, the 28-year-old once again dropped 12 points, three rebounds, and two assists. But even then, the team needs a fair playground in order to pile on the victories. And that is something that the Wings have been missing for some time. The discontent with the WNBA officiating has been nothing new. From Tyler Marsh to Natalie Nakase, everybody has expressed their discontent.

Chris Koclanes was the latest name to be added to the list. With Bueckers struggling to find her footing against a tight Golden State defence, Koclanes believed that the referees were pretty much ignoring the fouls made on Bueckers.
“The whistle wasn’t going our way, and then I see Paige get run over on a box out. How many times does she have to be on the ground before she gets protection? I had to step in and show our players I have their back. I hoped it would be a momentum changer, but Golden State responded with timely threes,” Koclanes said.
Surely, dealing with a lot of problems, the management will have a plethora of issues to address before the next season. However, with the likes of Bueckers and Okonkwo showing promise, fans might expect a transformed Dallas Wings in the future.
