With the CBA deadline date coming closer and closer, fans are hoping to see the end of CBA discussions before November 30. While the CBA closure will ensure the 2026 WNBA season, there is one more reason for the anxiety – the WNBA draft lottery, which will take place on November 23, and the Dallas Wings hold top odds for the number 1 overall pick.
Interestingly, the wings are nearly in rebuild mode following back-to-back disappointing seasons. Historically, top picks have performed exceptionally well in the league, which will bolster the Wings’ young core.
Dallas Wings Will Be Desperate For Top Pick
The Wings tried their best to provide veteran support to their 2025 first overall pick, Paige Buckers. Addition of NaLyssa Smith and DiJonai Carrington amped up their forward line-up, and the presence of Arike Ogwumike provided them a strong back-court partner for PB. Sadly, the experiment didn’t work for them as they finished 13th in the league with just 10 wins.

Now they have another chance of a rebuild, mainly because of the smart trades they made midway through the season, collecting multiple top draft picks and clearing out the space for the incoming players. Interestingly, the Dallas Wings have a 42% chance to land the top pick, which is a ‘must have’ for the rebuild process.

Historically, 16 top picks delivered the Rookie of the Year performance in the league’s 28-year history, including the recent four winners. For the team looking to add more young talent, another top pick would be a massive boost.

Moreover, the Indiana Fever’s recent success is built on their two top picks (2023 and 2024). The Seattle Storm also returned to top form with the help of their back-to-back top picks (2015 and 2016). The reigning champions also formed their foundation on the back of their back-to-back top picks, A’ja Wilson (2018) and Jackie Young (2019).
The Wings already have one cornerstone player on their roster in Paige Bueckers, and adding another franchise player would help them dominate the league in the years to come.
Dallas Wings Have Multiple Choices For Top Pick In 2026
Considering the options, the Wings had an obvious choice in 2025 and chose Paige Buckers, but the 2026 WNBA draft presents multiple questions. If the team is looking for a guard-forward combo, they can opt for the current project’s top pick in the draft, Lauren Betts, who has been a consistently reliable and complementary player for PB.
If the franchise chooses to form a young back-court duo, they could reunite the UConn champions Paige Bueckers and Azzi Fudd, which also has a huge potential to lead the team to glory. While the top 5 WNBA draft prospects are very intriguing, the international talent coming in is also appealing, and the Dallas Wings can opt for an even younger player on the roster. All this is possible, provided the Texas franchise lands the top pick in the upcoming draft lottery.
