The situation regarding the Connecticut Sun is not at all rosy at the moment. Ever since officials announced the sale, controversy has spiraled rapidly. Initially, the Sun sale drew criticism from Senator Chris Murphy.
Next up, the Sun’s ownership accused the WNBA of deliberately blocking the sale to keep matters in their hands. Such a situation prompted a Connecticut Lawmaker to send a warning to the WNBA. Unfortunately, amid all the back and forth, negotiations stalled the team’s sale despite offers reaching up to $300 million.
However, as it turns out, not all doors were closed. And as has been revealed recently, the Houston Rockets ownership is very much interested in a relocation of the franchise.

Will The Connecticut Sun Finally Be Able To Find A Buyer In The Houston Rockets?
According to reports from Front Office Sports, the Suns are in advanced talks with the Rockets’ ownership. As of now, the franchise seems pretty much interested in acquiring the franchise and then relocating it subsequently.
In a statement given to Front Office Sports, a Mohegan leadership member stated, “Mohegan leadership continues to actively explore different avenues of investment opportunities for the CT Sun. We are excited with the growth of the WNBA and women’s basketball, and are taking a rigorous, diligent approach to this work. We fully understand and appreciate the value of the phenomenal women’s basketball we have had the privilege to support and lead for 23 remarkable seasons.”

However, the leadership also pointed out that they have not reached any confirmed agreement so far. They also refused to enlighten us about the details of any potential concepts for sale, too. Meanwhile, with Steve Pagliuca struggling to buy the franchise, US Senator Richard Blumenthal sent a warning to the WNBA.
Richard Blumenthal Unhappy With WNBA’s Handling Of The Connecticut Sun Sale Situation
Initially, it was Steve Pagliuca who wanted to buy the franchise. Making an offer of $325 million, it looked like things were all set for Pagliuca to take over. Unfortunately, in came Cathy Engelbert and co. and stalled the negotiations.

Thus, looking at the situation, US Senator Blumenthal expressed his disappointment. “Any further attempts by the WNBA to use its considerable governance and market power over the Connecticut Sun to limit or dictate negotiations with the state of Connecticut could be a unreasonable restraint of trade and interference with the market that would violate federal antitrust laws,” Blumenthal wrote.
The WNBA is blocking a record $325M sale of the Connecticut Sun. Why? Because they don’t want “regular” billionaires, only NBA billionaires.
