A’ja Wilson’s historic season handed the Las Vegas Aces its third championship in four seasons, cementing itself as a ‘dynasty’ of the current era. This dominance brings back memories of the first-ever dynasty, the Houston Comets, a team that won four titles in its first four seasons.
Sadly, they couldn’t continue for long, and the league shut down the franchise in 2008. However, considering the current growth of the league, every city wants a team, including Houston. But when the WNBA made the announcement of three new franchises, they were not on the list. It doesn’t mean that the team won’t have a team, though.
Houston Can Have WNBA Team With Connecticut Sun Relocation Talks
Before A’ja Wilson, Caitlin Clark, and Napheesa Collier started playing basketball (or even being born), Cynthia Cooper, Sheryl Swoopes and Tina Thompson were dominating the WNBA, a newly formed basketball league for women, with the Houston Comets. Although the league folded the team in 2008, the interest is still there with an opportunity right on the plate.

As per NBA insider Jake Fischer, “word has persisted that Houston continues to be the leading destination for relocation of the Connecticut Sun, according to league sources, if the franchise is indeed moved out of the Mohegan Sun casino to a new locale.”
Interestingly, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver also spoke about Houston’s chances earlier in his comments on the Sun’s sale.

With the Suns’ owners willing to cut their ties with the franchise, the progress was faster than expected. However, the WNBA later halted the sale. Connecticut Sun ownership accused the WNBA of blocking the sale and ‘trying to steal’ the franchise. The Mohegan group also claimed that they had four options to fast-track the sale. However, the league remained firm in its decision, and by the end of 2025, the Mohegan group still owned the side.
Now, Houston could benefit from this ‘progress’ as the end of the season will likely give the parties time to consider the relocation, to which the Texas city is the prime target. Sadly, they are not alone in the race.
Boston Also Eyeing Connecticut’s WNBA Team
The initial talks were with the Boston team, as the minority owners were ready with an offer and plan for the Connecticut Sun. But the deal collapsed after the league’s interference. But the Boston Celtics’ new owners, Bill Chisholm, are not willing to accept defeat.
“First of all, I think Boston should have a team. This is the best sports city in the country and the birthplace of basketball. We should have a team. It’s something we’ll look at. The WNBA has a process, and we’ll look to expedite that. Philosophically, it makes so much sense,” Chisholm said.
With both cities having rich basketball histories, it will be interesting to watch where the Sun will land in the upcoming seasons.
