The CBA stalemate has no further update, rather confusing ones with the league declaring its schedule for the upcoming season, and players already questioning its intentions. Though 15 days ago, Breanna Stewart offered a hopeful outlook on WNBA CBA negotiations, the deal is not complete yet.
While there are many points of discussion in the CBA, players sort out non-negotiable terms that the league should focus on priority. And now, after over 15 months of meetings, there are new issues that even ‘confirmed CBS’ won’t be able to resolve.

WNBA Missed The Chance To Build A Relationship With Players
Fans seek a definite answer to the discussions and want to see the season underway. Looking at the pace at which the topic is moving forward, and all the ‘pending works’ that the league has to complete, WNBA analyst Rachel DeMita predicts the WNBA will delay the 2026 season if pressure is not built.
Although the players’ association is putting up pressure on the league, the league is still looking to find common ground, safeguarding its own interests in the CBA, too. In order to get the season underway, both parties might agree on a CBA, but the league has certainly lost trust.
Usually, the WNBA is experiencing a free agency frenzy at this time of year.

‘Pay Us What You Owe Us’ slogans are still echoing in the arenas, fans booing the WNBA Commissioner on trophy presentation night highlights the anger around the league, and the WNBA’s claim of future losses makes the situation worse.

At this point, it’s clear that not only do both parties not agree, but there’s also an element of trust that’s missing from the conversation entirely. This trust and co-operation were the base of WNBA’s success so far, and if that bridge is broken, it will be just a matter of time before the league experiences its decline.
WNBA Might See Change In Management
One thing that can still flip the above narrative – a change in management. Early in November, ESPN Analyst Elle Duncan clarified the timeline for a potential Cathy Engelbert replacement as league Commissioner. With the players constantly targeting the league leader and her policies, it was clear that the WNBPA doesn’t want to see her in position.

The NBA’s Commissioner also hinted at the issue. But he trusted the current commissioner to get things in line. But now, at the end of January, things got even severe. As a ‘damage control’, fans might see a new commissioner in place, but only after the CBA discussions are clear.
