After a nervy win in Game 1, A’ja Wilson sent an urgent message to her teammates during her post-game interview. And the team’s response in the next game was instrumental, with every star playing at their full potential against the Mercury. Jackie Young was one such star who delivered on the night, helping the side to clinch a 91-78 victory.
She scored a game-high 32 points in the game and shot 60% from the field. Her third-quarter performance was exceptional, handing her a WNBA Finals record in the process.
Jackie Young Sets WNBA Finals’ Points Record
Game 2 at the Michelob ULTRA arena was one-sided, with the hosts dominating every aspect of the game, leaving the Mercury side with no chance of a comeback. Becky Hammon had her usual stars making the impact, while the support cast also put up an excellent show to control the game. Meanwhile, it was a record-setting night for the former Notre Dame guard, Young.

The 28-year-old player scored 21 points in the third quarter, which is the highest by any player in any quarter for the WNBA Finals series. She also had a game-high 32 points and nearly outscored the entire Mercury team (24 points) in the third quarter.
In the interview, the talented guard joked that “the rim was big”, allowing her to score at will. She also added that she was trying to play in the right way and be aggressive on the court to keep pressure on the opponents.

But, it wasn’t the only historic feat that the Aces had in the game. A’ja Wilson and Young combined for 60 points, which is the second-most score by a duo ever in the Finals. As per ESPN, Jewell Loyd and Breanna Stewart hold the record for most points by a duo (65 in 2020) during WNBA Finals.
A’ja Wilson also had an incredible night with 28 points and 14 rebounds. She scored 20 points in the first half, becoming only the third player to do so in the WNBA Finals. Talking about Young’s performance, the reigning MVP got a bit ‘cheeky’.
A’ja Wilson Trolls Jackie Young After Record-Setting Night
During the on-court interview, Wilson trolled the 28-year-old forward for her record-setting game. When asked about her views on the guard’s achievement, Wilson reminded her about Game 1’s poor performance but then praised her for the Game 2 scoring night.
“I don’t know where Jackie was in Game 1, but I am glad that she showed up in Game 2. I knew she was destined for this type of game. This is Jackie’s element, like this is what she lives for. This is why she works so hard,” Wilson said.
Young scored just 11 points in game 1, with Dana Evans stepping up for the Aces for the win. Evans even set a WNBA Finals record in Game 1 with her performance. The side-eye by the star forward and the funny jab shared went viral as the Aces fans celebrated a 2-0 lead in the WNBA final. The Mercury team will look for answers in Game 3. They will host the Aces at the PHX Arena on October 8 for the next game.
