The Dallas Wings had a lot of expectations when they roped in Paige Bueckers last year. Sadly, their hopes did not materialize as the team failed miserably in their pursuit of racking up significant wins. As their nightmarish season came to a close, the front office appointed Jose Fernandez as the new coach.
Immediately, Fernandez pointed towards a change of attitude. Promising his fans a winning mentality, the Wings are looking well on course to have a memorable season. Now then, as Bueckers has garnered heavy praise, there was one more rookie talent who had to sit out due to her injury. Eyeing a redemption this year, JJ Quinerly shared her long journey back to the court.

Is JJ Quinerly Ready For WNBA 2026 Season?
One of the biggest reasons for the Wings’ failure last season was their injury-plagued roster. Initially, they lost Arike Ogunbowale and Li Yueru. However, perhaps one of the telling blows came when Quinerly suffered a right knee ACL sprain on August 20 against the Los Angeles Sparks. Compelled to end her season, the 23-year-old star’s WNBA career looked uncertain.
Thankfully, owing to her grit and determination, this season comes as a breath of fresh air. For the first time in months, Quinerly has been scratched off the injury list ahead of the Wings’ preseason game against the Las Vegas Aces.
Overwhelmed about her return, the Wings’ star detailed her journey to the ‘Dallas Hoops Journal’ saying, “It’s been going good. Mentally, I’m doing well within myself. Physically, I’ve been working with the team, and I worked out a lot back home doing recovery and PT. Now being back with them is good. Today I got to get up and down a little bit, so that felt good. It’s a process, but I’ll be back soon, hopefully.”

The Virginia native had to undergo a complicated procedure. Going under the knife on October 3 last year, the 5-foot-3 star underwent an osteochondral allograft procedure and a meniscus repair.
Meanwhile, sitting on the bench, the youngster studied a new position that she is eager to try to fit for the new season.
Is JJ Quinerly The Dallas Wings’ New Point Guard?
The 5-foot-3 star could only suit up for 34 games last year. Dropping averages of 6.5 points, 1.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 0.9 steals in 15.9 minutes per game, the rookie star looked impressive. However, as a two-guard for West Virginia University, the 23-year-old took on the task of evolving into a point guard. And guess what? She used her injury break to study minutely how a point guard works.

“I would say just being able to sit back and watch from the bench. Not being on the court allowed me to see how to play as a point guard. I was a two guard in college, so coming in here and playing that point guard role was a little different for me,” said Quinerly in her recent interaction with the ‘Dallas Hoops Journal.’
Thus, with a lot going on, all eyes will be on how the youngster performs this season.
