The New York Liberty is already planning for the future, and the first step has been taken towards a new era. General Manager Jonathan Kolb explained the reasons for firing the HC Sandy Brondello, but mentioned that the team is looking to adjust to the new and ever-evolving WNBA.
On a similar note, the GM added that the franchise is open to a talented individual for the head coach position. While the coaching question might still be in the testing phase, Kolb is confident about a brighter future for the 2024 champions.
New York Liberty GM Jonathan Kolb Sees Opportunity In Future
The New York Liberty might have lost in the first round of the 2025 playoffs, but the front office is showing trust in its core and looking to put the right personnel in the right places ahead of the 2026 season. While they started off with the removal of Sandy Brondello, there are no further cuts in the roster.

While GM Janathan Kolb is confident of getting his superstar trio back for the 2026 season, he sees a massive opportunity for the franchise in the upcoming offseason. Referring to the unfinished CBA negotiations, the front office leader is looking to get more and more talented players in the offseason.
“This is honestly a probably once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for many franchises. I also feel that the next — I don’t know what the contract links will be — but three or four years, the WNBA future is going to be decided in the matter of a few weeks,” Kolb tells the press.

New York Liberty Looking To Evolve
While Breanna Stewart openly supported Sandy Brondello in the press conference, the front office took a decisive step against the 57-year-old coach. Explaining the reasons, Kolb mentioned that Liberty will evolve in the coming years.
The Liberty and Aces have experienced a change in style since two years ago, with Kolb stating that it is more important to lean into continuity as the catalyst for 2025. Both teams were super-teams in the recent past and now the Indiana Fever, Phoenix Mercury are also evolving as challengers.
“Coming out of this season and really seeing an influx of change on many teams made the decision timeline tangible and one that we can be actionable on,” Kolb said, explaining the firing of the HC.
The Liberty’s vision is to be the league leaders in the future, and it will be interesting to watch how Kolb uses his ‘opportunity’ to make that dream come true.
