The New York Liberty is going through a tough phase at the moment. Coming in as the defending champions, the team under Sandy Brondello failed to replicate their phenomenal run from 2024. Immediately after, the team was further rocked by the news of the management’s sacking of the head coach. However, while Jonathan Kolb revealed why Liberty parted ways with Brondello, the tensions are very much heightened.
Thankfully, in a recent update, the Liberty fans have something to cheer about in Jonquel Jones. Jones has been one of the biggest stars of the Liberty side. Owing to her incredible performance on the hardwood, the 31-year-old was awarded the Finals MVP back in 2024. Now, after suffering significantly with an ankle injury, Jones recently had a major update.
Jonquel Jones Shares Positive Update About Her Ankle Injury
Jones had been dealing with her ankle since the start of the season. Trying to eliminate her pain point, the Liberty star had quite a frustrating 2025 season. She sprained her right ankle not once but twice, causing her to miss a total of 13 games. Now, as the offseason is underway, it looks like Jones has finally managed to get rid of her lingering ankle problems.
In a recent Instagram story, the Liberty star updated that she was recovering from the injury. The IX’s Jackie Powell reported that Jones has undergone a “minor surgery to correct Jones’ right ankle instability.” Next up, the 31-year-old also uploaded a video from her hospital bed. Jones could be seen with her right leg heavily taped. She captioned her post, “Surgery done. Officially Day 1 of recovery.”

Well, despite the surgery, the Liberty star is keen on suiting up for the Turkish giants, Fenerbahce, this offseason. Meanwhile, as her injury curtailed her season significantly, Jones still had a phenomenal run.

Jonquel Jones Was Impressive Despite Her Injury Issues
Jones’s impact on the Liberty was evident in her pivotal role during their championship run. And although everyone expected her to perform similarly this year, her unfortunate injury set her back.. But despite not being able to unleash her full potential, Jones was more than impressive this year. She dropped averages of 13.6 points, 8.1 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.1 blocks per game. Jones also extended a wild double-double franchise record.
With the season coming to an end, the Liberty veteran stressed that she wanted to come back and continue with New York. However, as of now, she is a free agent. Kolb emphasized that he fully supports players like Jones. Additionally, Brondello’s recent firing could become a deciding factor. Thus, it is evident that Jones is working hard for her recovery.
