The Dallas Wings, after back-to-back disappointing seasons, are looking for a fresh start. They have had five head coaches in the last seven seasons, and now introduce NCAA veteran coach Jose Fernandez as the captain of the ship.
Geno Auriemma hailed Fernandez’s hire as a perfect fit for Paige Bueckers, and the Wings’ fans will be hoping for the same. Recently, he attended his first press conference as the Wing’s HC and showed an optimistic approach.
Jose Fernandez With Strong Words For Dallas Wings
The Wings fans were hoping for a strong name at the head coach position after Chris Konclan failed to deliver last year. The franchise chose an experienced coach for the position. New coach, Fernandez, revealed emotional feelings over leaving USF after 25 years. But now he is focused on the task at hand, and his introductory press conference was a positive sign for the supporters.

Fernandez said, “This won’t be the same old Dallas Wings, my brother. Change is coming, and we’re gonna win.” The franchise finished at the 13th position with 10 wins last season and had nine wins in the 2024 season.
"Change is coming and we’re gonna win."

He also praised the Wings’ rookie Paige Bueckers, calling her special and lauding her willingness to learn. He highlighted that the gameplay would suit the superstar guard, as he plans to deploy a half-court press strategy, which will open up the floor for the 2025 Rookie of the Year winner.

Showing his excitement to work with the former UConn star, the 53-year-old coach added that he is looking forward to forming a relationship with everybody on the roster, where they feel comfortable on the floor, in what they like, and what they don’t like. On similar lines, the franchise and Fernandez have a roster to build from through trades, free agency, and the 2026 WNBA draft.
Jose Fernandez Could Surprise Fans With Shocking Draft Pick
With the CBA situation still unresolved, the 2026 WNBA draft is shaping up to be one of the most interesting ones for the franchises. There are many champions and All-Stars in the free agency, while the draft class is also full of promising talents, leaving the teams with multiple choices to select from.
As for the Wings, the team will aim for a quick fix with some of the top player signings at the ‘problematic’ positions, which include small forward, power forward, center, and a backup guard.
With that in mind, the team could surprise the fans and analysts with the selection of a player outside of the predicted top five prospects of the 2026 WNBA draft.
One top name coming into the picture is Awa Fam after GM Curt Miller’s recent visit to Spain. With Fernandez’s specialty in player development, the 19-year-old sensation fits in the system for the Wings. They could later build around the Spanish forward and Paige Bueckers are the core.
