JuJu Watkins has quietly become one of women’s basketball’s most talked-about players, even while managing serious adversity. In a recent encounter with the media, the USC star encountered a question on whether Paige Bueckers was “capitalizing” on the spotlight left by Caitlin Clark’s absence due to injury.
Timing was crucial as the WNBA’s double standards for Clark and Bueckers have recently come into the public eye. Rather than drawing divisive comparisons, Watkins deflected and redirected the conversation with grace. The young star sent a subtle yet clear message about refusing to compare at any cost.
JuJu Watkins Shuts Media Over Caitlin Clark-Paige Bueckers Question
While the Indiana Fever star rookie is nursing her season-ending injuries, not an injury, the media knows exactly what they want to make out as ‘news.’ And just like that, the controversial question came amid the 2025 WNBA season when Clark, following a standout rookie run, was sidelined with ankle and groin issues.

While the reporter tried pressing her on getting some spicy, bold take on the matter, Watkins didn’t shy away from acknowledging the talents of both players. When asked whether Paige Bueckers was “taking advantage” of Clark’s injury absence in terms of media attention or comparisons, Watkins outsmarted the TMZ guy.
“I think they’re both great players. Love watching Paige, she has a great game. So I’m excited to see her continue to do well. And I hope Caitlin gets better as soon as possible,” JuJu said.

Though her tone remained measured, she clearly emphasized admiration over competition. She also expressed empathy toward Clark’s situation, wishing her a speedy recovery.
Caitlin Clark’s Injury Almost Changed WNBA’s Dynamics
While media comparisons are inevitable, there’s a more serious issue here, and that is the injuries. Clark’s absence wasn’t just a subplot, though. It changed dynamics in WNBA coverage, fan interest, and made visible how fragile athlete health can be.
Watkins herself suffered a torn ACL during USC’s NCAA Tournament run, which ended her season prematurely. However, it came at a time when Watkins was among NCAA stars who signed Unrivaled’s NIL deal. And she knows better than everyone what the sentiments turn into in such times. Injuries aside, what matters is how players, media, and audiences treat each other during these gaps.
