The Indiana Fever picked up yet another win. This time against the Phoenix Mercury. But the game got its attention for an entirely different reason. It began even before the scoreboard mattered. Ahead of the final whistle or the Mercury’s 107–101 loss to the Fever, the crowd at Gainbridge Fieldhouse had already made its intent clear. A player who once wore Indiana’s jersey, and arguably the most seasoned veteran in the league, faced open contempt. Boos echoed overhead as DeWanna Bonner stepped onto the court.
It then intensified as she took the ball and peaked when Bonner drew a foul from beyond the arc. A few even shouted “quitter.” Surely, this was no ordinary homecoming. In fact, such disrespect took Bonner and her teammates quite by surprise. And looking at the fiasco, Kahleah Copper felt that she had seen enough.
Kahleah Copper Takes On The Indiana Fever Fans
Well, for the uninitiated, Fever initially acquired DeWanna Bonner early this season. Unfortunately, after playing nine games, her form did not look impressive. Meanwhile, Bonner decided to step away from the action and sat out for five games. While she cited a personal reason, speculations rose that Bonner won’t be returning to Indiana. And making the speculations come true, Bonner did request a trade. She was ultimately waived by the Fever on June 25.
However, despite the troubled past with Indiana, Copper believed that Bonner deserved better. The Mercury guard felt irked by how Bonner was being insulted on the court.
“I just don’t understand. Like, she’s a legend. All the things she’s done for the league — the disrespect, I just can’t get down with it. It’s very distasteful what their fan base is doing when it comes to DB, because she is just the sweetest soul. The situation didn’t work for her and it wasn’t what she wanted or whatever, but we don’t need all of that. It’s just unnecessary,” said Copper.

Coming back to the game, Bonner, for her part, kept her composure. She did not gesture or respond to the crowd. She logged in with four points and one rebound in just over 20 minutes. Meanwhile, the ex-Indiana Fever star gave her reasons for leaving.

DeWanna Bonner Clarifies Indiana Fever Rumors
Following DeWanna Bonner’s exit from the Fever, several speculations popped up. One of them was that Bonner was uncomfortable coming off the bench. However, to clear the air, Bonner stated that she did not have a problem playing the bench role.
“That wasn’t ever the issue. That’s never been me. I have no problems coming off the bench… I don’t feel like I have that reputation,” Bonner told the reporters.

Thus, with things looking a bit rocky, fans cannot wait to see how Bonner approaches her season next.
