Winner mentality is an integral part of the sport. Championship sides look to keep pushing for the next title and make adjustments to keep their dream alive. The 2023 WNBA Champions, the Las Vegas Aces, are at a crossroads. Currently, the side is struggling to make it to the postseason even though the team leader, A’ja Wilson, is delivering another MVP season.
There is one hope for the side to make a move in the trade market. The current free agency has multiple stars available, and the team will look to select the best option that fits their requirements.
Las Vegas Aces Face Tough Decisions
The Aces became the first team to win back-to-back titles since the Sparks’ 2002 feat. The achievement put them on the elite team’s list, led by Wilson. The GM wants to maintain this status with her star player on the roster.
“I think as we look at big-picture decisions for the Aces, this stretch is very important. It’s where championship habits are going to be solidified, and there’s a lot of great talent that’s going to be available. Are you wanting to be a part of a championship legacy? We’ve found that that’s been a great opportunity for us to talk about that in free agency previously,” team president Nikki Fargas told Associated Press.
The franchise is one of the few active teams with multiple titles. They are looking to extend their championship window further. The team traded for Jewell Lloyd, Dana Evans and NaLyssa Smith to support their franchise player and compete for the title.
But inconsistencies affected the team’s results, with the chance to qualify for the postseason fading away. The recent losses had been tough on the side, they still have 18 games in hand and may have a chance of adding a free agent before the trade deadline.. Coach Hammon shares the same views and understands the situation.

Las Vegas Aces Coach Hints At Wild Off-Season
There will be several free agents before the 2026 season. Players drafted from 2023 to 2025 will be under contract after the end of the ongoing season. Most of the star players will be unrestricted free agents, timing their contracts to match the new CBA deal.

Aware of the situation, Hammon mentioned that the team will be looking to keep its essential players and add players who fit the team’s culture.
“I think next year’s free agency is like the wild, wild West. There’s going to be people we’re obviously trying to keep their services here in Vegas, and then there are others we’re going to try to bring some people in,” Hammon said to the Associated Press.
Right now, the team is focused on the current season and adding players to improve its chances for the title.
