The Las Vegas Aces are a team of high ambitions. Winning the WNBA title back to back in 2022 and 2023, last year was the first time they were not the champion. And thus, going into the offseason, the Aces decided to inject some quality into their roster. Roping in Jewell Loyd was part of their plans to come back to the championship avenue this year.
Unfortunately, oftentimes, things do not go as planned. While Loyd did have some solid stats to back her, the current season has been anything but impressive. And now, as time runs out for the Aces, they stand at a crossroads of whether they want to inflict some hard decisions going forward.
Will The Aces Continue With Jewell Loyd?
Jewell Loyd is touted as the next big superstar of the WNBA. She has already won a couple of WNBA championships and has been a six-time All-Star. Not only that, she was also adjudged as the All-Star MVP for the year 2023. Coming into the Aces, the team had some specific expectations from Loyd. Playing alongside A’ja Wilson, the 31-year-old was supposed to complement Wilson’s explosive play.
Unfortunately, things have been going haywire for the Aces. Trying to win the third championship under Becky Hammon’s watchful eyes, Loyd has been anything but a replica of her previous self. Averaging 11 points per game, this is her lowest scoring rate since her rookie season (10.7). Adding to her woes further, Loyd has scored under 10 points in a lot of games. Surprisingly, the number of games she has gone sub-10 is higher than what she did in her previous three years combined!

Aces lose to the Lynx by 31.
In their recent loss against the Minnesota Lynx, Loyd had yet another poor game. She scored zero points and could convert none of her 10 field goal attempts. She also failed to score from the three-peat range despite trying on four occasions. Thus, with a sorry performance, the Los Angeles Aces will have a decision to make. With 12 wins and 13 losses, time is running out for the Aces. Now, it is up to them if they want to cut Jewell Loyd from the roster. And explore some other options that would catalyze their championship run. Meanwhile, playing against the Mystics, Loyd made history.
Jewell Loyd Surpasses Tamika Catchings
Jewell Loyd is currently having a dismal run with the Aces. However, for a change, Loyd did show a glimpse of her previous self against the Washington Mystics. While her team lost, Loyd had a valiant effort, dropping 20 points. And while she scored a couple of three-pointers, Loyd made history. She has now entered the WNBA list of All-Time three-pointers list. With 607 makes, Loyd has now surpassed Tamika Catchings. Celebrating the feat, the Aces had a congratulatory message for their star athlete.
