Lauren Betts’ Crucial Block Helps UCLA Advance To First NCAA National Championship Game

The final four games in the NCAAW bracket were complete cinema with two arch rivals, UConn and Gamecocks, facing off on one end, while the UCLA and Texas sides were looking to win the title in the Era of ‘big three’. Lauren Betts made sure that her team completed its job with a perfectly executed defensive block.

The UCLA megastar is one of the top picks in the recent WNBA mock Draft, and she showcased her capability to prove the predictions right. But the most talked-about play was her block on Madison Booker.

Although it was a low-scoring game, it was close till the final moments, and with less than 30 seconds to go, the Texas guard came down for a layup. The leading scorer for the Longhorns was about to tie the game, but UCLA’s towering center denied her the chance.

A play drawn for two-pointer and had everything on spot except for the Betts’ block for the Longhorns. As much as Betts received praise for her play, some criticized the lay-up attempt.

Addressing the same, the towering center said, “She’s such an amazing player. I don’t want yesterday to take over the fact that she’s had an amazing season. I’ve seen a lot of the stuff that she’s getting right now. She really doesn’t deserve it all. I wish everybody would give her a little bit of grace because she’s a human at the end of the day.”

Booker won five first-team honors in the season with her performance and even secured her third Cheryl Miller Award, which goes to the country’s top small forward. Betts showed great character and sportsmanship, applauding her opponent.
