The Los Angeles Sparks had one of the most heartbreaking endings to their season this year. Fighting for the final playoff spot, the Sparks faced off against the Phoenix Mercury. Unfortunately, despite Los Angeles winning the game 88-83, it was not enough. That’s because they also needed the Golden State Valkyries to win against the Seattle Storm. Sadly enough, that did not happen, and the Sparks had to bow out with a sombre taste in their mouths. Yet, in the face of defeat, Dearica Hamby remains upbeat.
Despite losing the playoff spot by a whisker, the team has had quite an impressive run. Needing a win desperately, Spark’s Julie Allemand made WNBA history against the Wings. In fact, if the Sparks had not lost a couple of close games, things would have panned out way differently. Hamby made some positive remarks as they signed off the season with 22 wins and 22 losses.
Dearica Hamby Is Happy About How The Los Angeles Sparks Performed This Season
Hamby seemed to be pretty happy with what the Sparks achieved this season. Surely, a playoff qualification would have been the icing on the cake, but Hamby says the team has come a long way. Speaking about the team’s performance, the Sparks’ star stated that Los Angeles has taken its steps in the right direction.

“I came here two years ago and. . .the plan [was] the long term build, and to be a part of it. I want to be here. I feel like we took steps in the right direction. I think it’s a little frustrating, because you look at some of the games, and we were two games away, but I could count on two hands how many games that we gave up. So [I] still [feel] positive though, and [it’s] good momentum for the future,” said Hamby.

Hamby does have a point here. With the Storm having a 23-21 win-loss record, it all came down to how the team missed out on a couple of close games. One of the games that can be immediately recalled was the June 24 game against the Chicago Sky. Despite having a double-digit lead, the Sparks ended up losing the game. Meanwhile, coming back to the 31-year-old, she has been quite impressive. Hamby recently surpassed Diana Taurasi on the WNBA All-Time list. And she also had a very positive mindset ahead of the playoffs.

Dearica Hamby Was Positive As The Los Angeles Sparks Fought For The Playoffs
Just a couple of weeks earlier, the Sparks looked all set to qualify for the playoffs. Unfortunately, a flurry of losses made their contention pretty doubtful. Now, as the team will be regrouping for the next season, self-reflection will surely be a big part of the process. Interestingly, just like in the present day, Hamby had an extremely confident approach to the tight situation.

Looking at the tough calculations for the playoffs, Hamby laid stress on focusing on one game at a time. “One game at a time. We got Sunday, Washington, we’re trying to split the season series with them. We can kind of still control our own destiny, five-and-two and make a shot at this. So turn the page and keep going,” said Hamby.
The team will surely come back with more zeal and determination next year. Hamby’s positive energy will definitely boost the Sparks’ morale.
