The Los Angeles Sparks remain undefeated against the Indiana Fever in the 2025 WNBA season. The game on July 5 at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse was a close tussle with Kelsey Plum and co. escaping with an 89-87 scoreline. The visiting side took a dig at forward Sophie Cunningham with a savage social media post.
The former Phoenix Mercury star struggled in the game and scored just four points in 23 minutes. But the Sparks’ message was a direct dig at Cunningham’s comments before the game.
Sophie Cunningham’s Old Comments Come Back To Bite Her
A week ago, the WNBA announced three new franchises to join the league by 2030. It included Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia. When asked about her reaction, Sophie Cunningham made a bold statement, raising questions over players’ willingness to play in two of those cities. Two of those cities were Cleveland and Detroit.

Now, after a win over Stephanie White’s roster, the LA team took the opportunity to tease the forward of the losing team.
“List of cities Indiana has beef with: Detroit, Cleveland, Los Angeles,” the Sparks posted on X(formerly Twitter).

The jibe is with respect to the Fever’s record at the Crypto.com Arena. Since 2005, the Fever team has lost 18 games and won just five at the venue. Historically, the Sparks had also been a dominant force, winning 36 out of 51 meetings. So, the franchise is looking to keep the pressure on their opponents even before they set foot in the arena.
Next, Fever will travel to California to play Kelsey Plum and Co. on August 5 and August 30. The three-time champions’ shared post is an open challenge.
Caitlin Clark has been absent from the matches played between the two sides so far. She is expected to return to the lineup soon. While the next fixture is nearly one month away, fans will get to see CC’s effect on the games now in 2025.
Cunningham Already Clarified Her Stand On Expansion
The Missouri star was under fire for her insensitive comments on Cleveland and Detroit. The cities have already blasted forward with social media posts. Sophie Cunningham clarified her meaning as she said that her words were wrongly interpreted. Tony East posted a video with her clarification.
“First of all, I know the history behind the WNBA. I know both of those cities had teams before and they got us where we’re at, so I’m thankful for that. All I was really getting at is Broadway, the off-court lifestyle, so I think that is really intriguing,” the Fever forward said.
While the 28-year-old forward is not new to drama and criticism. Even in this scenario, the star mentioned that she would stay neutral and wouldn’t remark on others’ statements. She intended to clear her stand.
The veteran forward has pointed out important notes that the league might consider when choosing the next expansion teams. For now, Cunningham and co. will focus on the Sparks’ challenge.
