The Minnesota Lynx’s quest for a fifth title continues, as the team failed to overcome the Phoenix Mercury. Despite having the best record in the league, they looked vulnerable against the Mercury, who had a perfect plan to counter the Lynx’s offense. But in the 2025 offseason, the four-time champions can have a mega upgrade with just one addition – Marina Mabrey.
Even though there are trade rumors surrounding the Minnesota Lynx involving Sophie Cunningham, the player who could actually fit in directly at the starting role is Mabrey, whose skill set ticks most of the requirements.
Marina Mabrey Could Thrive In Minnesota Lynx
Lack of size in the front court and limited playmaker options put the Minnesota Lynx in need of a player who could swoop in, particularly at the small forward position. Their starter, Bridget Carleton, averaged below seven points in the game and filled up more of a 3-and-D role. While her lack of shooting and offensive output impacted the Lynx’s game offensively, the Sun guard will be the perfect solution.

Primarily, she is a playmaker who can score. This takes the load off Courtney Williams and Kayla McBride. Secondly, the former Sparks star showed her effectiveness around the rim, averaging four rebounds per game.

One more advantage would be her strong character. The Lynx were one of the ‘softest’ teams in the league, and teams like the Mercury, Aces and Fever easily ‘bullied them on the court. Having a strong voice on the floor would encourage other players and hand her a leadership role, too.

Interestingly, the Phoenix Mercury had targeted Marina Mabrey during the 2025 season, but the talks couldn’t reach an advanced stage. In 2025, though, one key factor could push the veteran star out of the Sun franchise – instability.
Unstable Situations Could Push Marina Mabrey Away From The Sun
The Connecticut team denied her trade request and kept her at the center of their plans. The return of Tina Charles provided the team with some veteran presence, yet they finished 11th in the league with 11 wins and 33 losses. Although injuries played a significant role in their poor run, the Sun struggled to find their footing in the 2025 season with a new coach and new players.
On top of that, the relocation talks make the situation even more ‘confusing’ with no clear direction and ownership of the franchise. The guard is 29 years old and would look to make use of her ‘prime years’ to challenge for the title, and the Connecticut Sun doesn’t seem to be that franchise in the next two seasons, at least.
