The Connecticut Sun had one of the worst seasons this year. Picking up just 11 wins, the Sun succumbed to a whopping 33 losses. With a dismal performance this year, the Sun set an unwanted franchise losses record recently. And while the team will be looking to regroup and come back stronger, veteran star Marina Mabrey had some interesting words to share.
The Sun’s poor run continued even in their final regular-season game. Squaring up against the Atlanta Dream, the team lost 88-72. As Mabrey emerged as the lone bright spot, her commitment to the franchise did look a little rocky.
Marina Mabrey Might Not Be Returning To The Connecticut Sun Next Year
Mabrey has been the only silver lining for the Sun this year. Unfortunately, throughout the season, as the team’s performance slumped, it was evident that the Sun’s star might be developing a sense of frustration. Soon after the game against the Dream concluded, the 28-year-old stated that she will be ‘back’ next year. This statement soon gained traction as fans took this as her commitment to the Sun for the next year.

But soon, Mabrey explained what exactly her statement meant. The 28-year-old wanted to convey that she will be stressing on coming back healthy next season. “UPDATE: Spoke to Marina at postgame, who clarified (that) what she meant was coming back healthy next season, not necessarily committing to returning to Connecticut,” Sun reporter Gabby Alfveby wrote.

Surely, this was a declaration that a lot of Sun supporters had not seen coming. In the game against Dream, Mabrey dropped 22 points with five assists. She also had an 8-of-15 shooting, further asserting her dominance as a quality player of the team. Meanwhile, Mabrey’s decision to wait on her commitment to Sun might have other reasons, too. With the franchise getting sold, Senator Chris Murphy criticized the WNBA for their offer. And he was not the only one to express his frustrations.

Senator Richard Blumenthal Issues Warning To WNBA As Marina Mabrey Is Doubtful For The Next Season
The Sun is facing so many problems all at once. With the dismal season coming to an end, a solid rebuilding plan is required. And for that to happen, it is very important to have stable ownership. Unfortunately, that has not been the case with Connecticut. With the Mohegan Tribe willing to sell the team, they received a lucrative offer of $325 million from Steve Pagliuca. However, that was thwarted by the WNBA, which made its own offer of $250 million. Irritated by the same, Senator Richard Blumenthal recently lashed out at the league.

“Any further attempts by the WNBA to use its considerable governance and market power over the Connecticut Sun to limit or dictate negotiations with the state of Connecticut could be a unreasonable restraint of trade and interference with the market that would violate federal antitrust laws,” Blumenthal wrote.
Surely, all such aspects have led to the development of a tumultuous situation inside the Sun locker room. And that might be a big reason for Mabrey to remain doubtful about her return to Connecticut next season.
