There’s no team like the Minnesota Lynx this season. While the 2025 WNBA season had a 44-game schedule per team, the Lynx required just 32 games to secure its place in the postseason. The Western Conference team has a strong 27-5 record and is seated at the top spot in the league standings.
The confirmation for their playoff qualification came after the Indiana Fever’s recent loss against the Dallas Wings. With the playoff spot secured early, the team would focus on the remaining games and rotating its players in the game to keep itself fresh and ready for the tough series.
Minnesota Lynx Secure 2025 WNBA Playoff Spot
It all started with a 9-0 run at the start of the season. The 2024 finalists matched the New York Liberty’s unbeaten run and stayed in the top two rankings right from the beginning. Despite some hiccups like the late arrival of Kayla McBride and an injury to Napheesa Collier, Cheryl Reeve’s defense-first strategy helped the team maintain its position.
The Fever’s loss against the Wings eliminates all possible scenarios for Stephanie White’s side to surpass the top-seeded Lynx, allowing the side to qualify for the postseason. They also have a strong 6.5-game lead over the second-placed Liberty and Atlanta Dream. It is very likely that the Lynx will end the regular season as the league leaders. As for the Fever, it will be a tough road ahead, especially without Caitlin Clark in the mix.

The Atlanta Dream and New York Liberty are tied at a 20-11 record and have shown a strong push for the second-place finish. The Las Vegas Aces, on a four-game winning run also entered the playoff discussions after a slow start. The Valkyries and Mercury’s late dip in form put them out of the contest for the top spot, allowing the Lynx to become first team to qualify.
Interestingly, the last three WNBA Champions had been top seed teams and the Lynx will love to continue the tradition. Moreover they lost in the Commissioner’s Cup Final, which traditionally benefitted a losing side in the post season run.

Factors Contributing Minnesota Lynx’s Dominance This Season
There were many key factors, other than consistency and strong start, that helped the Lynx to stay at the top of the league right from the start. First and foremost, the form of Napheesa Collier. The 2024 MVP runners-up continued to dazzle on the court and was main contributor to the team’s strong start.

Before injury, she averaged 23.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists. Coupling these impressive stats with her two steals and blocks average handed the side a massive advantage in games. Apart from Phee, it was Kalya McBride who stepped up on the offensive end with the range shooting.
Alanna Smith’s defensive partnership with other forwards and Courtney Williams’ playmaking highlighted the versatility and depth in the roster that is gunning for the championship. The mid-season acquisitions of DiJonai Carrington and Jaylyn Sherrod provided depth in rotation and defensive stability to the team.
Apart from this, a strong home record fueled their surge in the 2025 season. The side lost only one game in 17 home matches, and it could be an advantage going into the postseason as the number one seed. With the team’s leader, Collier, out injured, securing an early playoff spot hands Reeve a luxury of giving her more recovery time.
